The Sacramento River Cats have been in the news as one former player was traded to the World Series Champions, two were added to the San Francisco Giants’ 40-man roster, and another was re-signed to an MiLB deal.

Right-hander Jay Jackson, who pitched 33 games between San Francisco and Sacramento in 2021, was traded to the Atlanta Braves on Nov. 22.

Jackson had a 1.29 ERA, 0.43 WHIP, .106 opposing batting average, and 24 strikeouts in 14.0 innings for the River Cats this season. In 21.2 innings for San Francisco, he was 2-1 with a 3.74 ERA, 1.25 WHIP, .197 opposing batting average, and 28 strikeouts.

On Nov. 19, outfielder Heliot Ramos and right-hander Sean Hjelle, two younger Giants ranking inside the organization’s top-30 prospects on MLB Pipeline, were added to the 40-man roster.

Ramos, San Francisco’s No. 4 prospect, hit .272 in 54 games with Sacramento this season, with 30 runs, 11 doubles, two triples, four home runs, 30 RBIs, and a .722 OPS.

Hjelle, the No. 13 prospect, finished off his debut Triple-A season with his best start, striking out five while allowing just two hits in 6.0 shutout innings against the Isotopes on Oct. 2. Overall, the 6’11 right-hander went 2-6 with a 5.74 ERA, 35 strikeouts, and 1.80 WHIP in 53.1 innings for Sacramento.

Right-hander Trevor Hildenberger has also returned to the Giants on an MiLB deal. Hildenberger was 2-1 with a 4.70 ERA, 23 strikeouts, and a 1.35 WHIP in 23.0 innings.

In addition to the transactions, eight Giants prospects competed in the Arizona Fall League this offseason, including three that played at Sutter Health Park in 2021.

Right-hander Gregory Santos, the Giants’ No. 24 prospect on MLB Pipeline, went 0-1 with a 4.15 ERA for Scottsdale, striking out 12, inducing three double plays, and walking five in 13.0 innings. The hard-throwing 22-year-old struck out 15 in 15.2 innings for the River Cats in 2021, his first taste of Triple-A.

Fellow top-30 prospects on Scottsdale included outfielder Hunter Bishop (No. 6 prospect) and infielder Will Wilson (No. 15 prospect). Both played in Sacramento during the Alternate Site exhibitions at Sutter Health Park prior to the start of the 2021 regular season.

Bishop posted a .373 OBP with four runs, five doubles, and eight RBIs, while Wilson hit .164 with nine runs, two home runs, and three doubles.
