Devers, Moncada Named Postseason All-Stars

SALEM, Va. (August 27, 2016) - Owners of a league-best 81-48 record entering Saturday's action, the Salem Red Sox placed two players on the Carolina League postseason All-Star team. Rafael Devers was chosen at third base while Yoan Moncada was voted in at second base.

Unlike the mid-season All-Star selections, only one player from each position is selected to the year end All-Star team. The duo becomes the first postseason All-Stars for Salem since Reed Gragnani was named to the team as a utility infielder in 2014.

Devers has completely turned his season around after a slow start to the campaign. Through 119 games, the 19-year-old is hitting .280 with 11 home runs and 70 RBI. The 11 long balls lead the team, as do his 132 hits, 61 runs scored, and 212 total bases. He ranks second on the squad in RBI and doubles (31), while placing third in triples (eight) and walks (38).

Among league leaders, Devers is tied for third in triples, fourth in the circuit in hits and total bases in addition to ranking fifth in extra-base hits.

Devers is rated as the number two (Baseball America) and three (MLBPipeline.com) prospect in the Red Sox system and one of the top 20 prospects in all of baseball. In addition to his sterling offensive numbers, he leads the Carolina League in fielding percentage among third baseman at .969, committing only 11 errors in 352 total chances.

Despite not playing with Salem in the second half, Moncada was voted the best second baseman in the circuit by league coaches, general managers and media members. In his time with Salem, Moncada hit .307 in 61 games with four homers, 34 RBI, 25 doubles, three triples, 57 runs scored and 36 stolen bases. After being named a mid-season All-Star for the Carolina League, Moncada was promoted to Double-A Portland on June 21 and has since been named the MVP of the Futures Game held in San Diego earlier this year.

Rated as the consensus top prospect in the Red Sox system and the number three (Baseball America) and seven (MLBPipeline.com) in all of baseball, the 21-year old is in his second professional season, of which he has been voted a postseason All-Star both times, garnering postseason South Atlantic League accolades last season.

The Red Sox have posted the third-most wins in franchise history and look to finish with a double half championship, currently trailing the Myrtle Beach Pelicans by one game with 10 contests remaining.
