SALEM, VA (Monday, July 9) - The Salem Red Sox got nine hits but couldn't keep pace with their visitors Monday night, falling short of a fifth straight win and surrendering 10 doubles in a 7-3 loss to the Winston-Salem Dash at Haley Toyota Field.
The Red Sox (10-8, 42-44) saw their four-game winning streak snapped after building a lot of momentum over their nine-game road swing. The Dash (13-5, 54-34) had only two singles among their 12 hits, with the rest of their offense coming from two-baggers.

The teams had a back-and-forth battle of sacrifice flies early on. In the top of the first, Gavin Sheets brought in Luis González on a sacrifice fly off Salem starter Daniel Gonzalez (L, 7-3), only for C.J. Chatham to plate Tyler Hill in the bottom of the inning against Winston-Salem starting pitcher Blake Hickman (W, 2-2). The Dash added a run back in the top of the second, as Zach Remillard doubled to open the frame, advanced to third on a balk, and came home to score on a sacrifice fly by Luis Gonzalez to put Winston-Salem in front 2-1.
Salem drew level in the bottom of the fourth inning, as Jerry Downs worked a leadoff walk and moved to second on a one-out groundout by Ryan Scott. Jordan Procyshen sliced a single into center field, scoring Downs and tying the game at 2-2.
The Dash immediately responded in the top of the fifth inning. Laz Rivera smacked a leadoff double, and came in on a two-out two-bagger by Sheets. A wild pitch advanced Sheets to third base, and Yermin Mercedes singled him home, running the Winston-Salem lead to 4-2.
Winston-Salem added some breathing room in the top of the eighth against new reliever Jake Cosart, as a leadoff double by Sheets was followed by a one-out RBI double from Ti'Quan Forbes to run the lead to 5-2. Salem edged closer in the bottom of the inning against reliever Danny Dopico (H, 5), as Chatham singled to lead off before Bobby Dalbec walked to put runners at first and second with no outs. Downs bounced to first to start a double play, with Chatham reaching third. Michael Osinski rapped a single into left; that was good enough to score Chatham and trim the lead down to 5-3.
The Dash put the finishing touches on their win in the ninth. Cosart fanned Luis Gonzalez and Rivera to start the frame, but Blake Rutherford, Mitch Roman and Sheets connected on three straight doubles, with Rutherford and Roman scoring to give the Dash their final 7-3 margin.
Daniel Gonzalez was touched up for four runs on seven hits and three walks in six innings, fanning one. Hunter Smith recorded one strikeout in a perfect inning of relief. Cosart surrendered three runs on five hits (all doubles) in two innings,
The Sox will aim to get back on the winning track Tuesday night, with righty Bryan Mata on the bump for Salem against Dash right-hander Blake Battenfield. First pitch at Haley Toyota Field is scheduled for 7:05 p.m., and the pregame show with Ben Gellman and Suzie Cool begins at 6:45 p.m. on the Red Sox broadcast network.
