San Antonio's comeback attempt came up just short in its 5-4 loss to Springfield Tuesday night at Wolff Stadium.
The Cardinals started strong in Tuesday's series opener, plating a pair of first inning runs off righty Lake Bachar (2-6) and then two more in the third on a John Nogowski homer to left.
Trailing by four, San Antonio sprung to life in the bottom of the third against righty Anthony Shew (6-6), slicing the deficit to 4-3 courtesy of a Kyle Overstreet RBI-single and Peter Van Gansen's two-RBI double to left center. The Missions nearly tied the game on a Michael Gettys single to right, but Van Gansen was gunned out at the plate by Johan Mieses.
In the fifth, the Cardinals took advantage of a Bachar error on a popup, eventually taking a 5-3 lead with a Victor Roache single to left. On the play, Josh Naylor kept Roache's hit from scoring two runs as he threw out Mieses at home.
Ty France got San Antonio back within one in the seventh with a single to right off reliever Elniery García.
The Missions nearly tied the game in the ninth against right-hander Seth Elledge, loading the bases with two outs for Kyle Overstreet. Unfortunately, for the Missions, Elledge (1st save) ended the threat by getting Oversteet to fly out to right.
San Antonio (22-22, 64-50) continues its three-game set with Springfield (19-26, 52-63) Wednesday at 7:05 PM. Jesse Scholtens (6-2, 3.45) will get the ball for the Missions, while the Cards counter with fellow righty Matt Pearce (0-3, 5.63). Wednesday is a Member Night presented by Randolph-Brooks Federal Credit Union, where RBFCU members can buy one ticket and get one free.
