A record-tying hit by Randy César was the difference as Corpus Christi completed a four-game sweep of San Antonio with a 1-0 win Wednesday night at Wolff Stadium.
Wednesday's finale featured a classic Wolff pitcher's duel between Missions righty Jacob Nix and Hooks southpaw Ryan Hartman.
Nix, in just his fifth start back from a Spring Training injury, was once again sensational. The 22-year-old hurler overcame a leadoff double in the first to quickly settle into a major groove. Nix struck out the side in the second and allowed just two total hits through six.
On most nights, Nix would have breezed to a win, but on Wednesday, Hartman was equally dominant. Hartman kept the Missions hitless until the sixth when Ty France doubled to left with two outs. San Antonio was not able to drive in France as Hartman fanned Webster Rivas to escape the inning.
In the top of the seventh, the Hooks plated the game's lone run and it had a historical feel to it. At first, however, Nix appeared to be closing in on another scoreless frame after getting both of the first two Corpus Christi batters out. Yordan Alvarez kept the inning alive with a double to right. After a passed ball move Alvarez to third, Cesar singled to left field to give the Hooks a 1-0 lead. The base knock also extended Cesar's hit streak to a Texas League record-tying 37 games.
Dean Deetz and Riley Ferrell (7th save) each tossed a frame in relief for the Hooks to complete the sweep and one-hitter.
Nix (1-1) was the hard-luck loser despite allowing just four hits and no walks, while striking out eight over seven innings.
San Antonio (0-2, 42-30) resumes its eight-game homestand Thursday with the first of four against Midland (0-2, 33-38). In addition to Thursday being a Metro PCS Dollar Night, it will also mark the return of the Flying Chanclas de San Antonio. Lake Bachar (0-4, 7.39) will get the ball for the Chanclas, while the RockHounds counter with fellow righty Logan Shore (1-3, 5.76).
Notes: Cesar is now tied with Bobby Trevino of El Paso (1969) for the longest hit streak in league history. It was just the sixth one-hitter in the 14-year history of the Hooks (2-0, 45-26).
