Clutch hits by All-Stars Austin Allen and Ty France lifted the Flying Chanclas de San Antonio to a 5-1 win over Midland Thursday night in front of a sellout Wolff Crowd of 6,520.
Thursday night's series opener looked eerily similar to Wednesday's finale against Corpus Christi, with pitching dominating early on. Chanclas starter Lake Bachar worked around four walks in his four innings by limiting the RockHounds to just two hits.
Fellow righty Logan Shore was also very sharp early, allowing just an Allen double in the second and a Peter Van Gansen single in the third through his first five frames.
In the top of the sixth, Midland ended the scoreless tie courtesy of Skye Bolt's solo homer to right off Chanclas reliever Miguel Diaz.
Desperate for some offense, the Chanclas finally put together a rally against Shore (1-4) in its half of the sixth. Fernando Tatis Jr. started things with a one-out single to right. A Tatis Jr. steal and a Josh Naylor walk would set the stage for France, who like so many times this season, delivered a clutch blow, this time a triple to right center that put the Chanclas up 2-1. Allen pushed the lead to two when he followed with a ground rule double to left.
The Chanclas put the game away in the eighth with a Michael Gettys two-run double to left center off Jarret Martin.
Diaz (2-2), Rowan Wick and T.J. Weir combined on five innings of three-hit ball to finish off the 'Hounds as well as the club's six-game losing streak.
Allen finished 3-for-3 with three doubles, a walk and a run scored. The catcher now as 23 doubles on the season, the second-most in the Texas League.
San Antonio (1-2, 43-30) continues its four-game series with Midland (0-3, 33-39) Friday on Used Car Night presented by Security Service Credit Union. Fans (18 and older) have a chance to go home with a "New to You" used car by filling out an entry form. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 PM. Newly named All-Star Jerry Keel (5-2, 4.97) will get the ball for the Missions, while the 'Hounds counter with righty Parker Dunshee (0-0, 0.00).
