The Flying Chanclas de San Antonio walked off Midland 5-4 Friday night on a passed ball in the ninth before 6,175 at Wolff Stadium.
Colin Rea received the ball for the Chanclas in his fourth rehab start. After struggling in his previous three outings, Rea showed what San Antonio fans became accustomed to during the right-hander's 2015 Texas League All-Star season. Rea set the 'Hounds down in order in each of his first two frames.
After the Cascade, IA native worked around a Mikey White leadoff single in the third, the Chanclas broke through for the game's first run in the bottom of the inning with a Josh Naylor productive groundout to first. San Antonio took advantage of an error earlier in the frame, which turned out to be the only run scored against starter Norge Ruiz in five impressive innings.
Rea would put zeroes up again in the fourth and fifth before running into trouble in the sixth. A walk and a Tyler Ramirez double would tie the game at one and end the night for Rea, who fanned eight. Midland would take a 2-1 lead later in the frame on fellow rehabber Phil Maton (joined the club earlier in the day) when Ramirez scored from third on a double play.
Unfazed, the Chanclas responded in the bottom of the sixth against Ruiz's replacement, lefty Pat Krall with consecutive RBI-singles from Peter Van Gansen and Rod Boykin to take a 3-2 lead. San Antonio pushed the lead to two in the seventh with a Kyle Overstreet single to center.
Overstreet's base knock proved vital as the 'Hounds took advantage of an error and a Brad Wieck (1-2) wild pitch in the ninth to plate two and knot up the score.
Thankfully, for the packed Wolff crowd, the Chanclas had one more rally in them. Midland reliever Cody Stull (1-1) appeared set to pitch his team into extras when he retired each of the first two batters to start the ninth. However, Webster Rivas kept the ninth alive with a single to right. Rivas would move to third when Overstreet followed with a single up the middle. It was a game-high fourth hit for Overstreet. Midland elected to intentionally walk Michael Gettys to load the bases for pinch-hitter Matt Batten. Stull's first pitch alluded catcher Santiago Chávez, allowing pinch-runner Taylor Kohlwey to score from third to end the game.
San Antonio (38-22) begins a crucial eight-game road trip Saturday with the first of four against Corpus Christi (36-24). First pitch from Whataburger Field is scheduled for 7:05 PM. Cal Quantrill (4-3, 4.15) will take the hill in the opener for the Missions, while the Hooks counter with fellow righty Yoanys Quiala (5-4, 5.17). Both teams won Friday so the Missions will take a two-game lead into Saturday's showdown.
