Flying Chanclas Announce 2021 Field Staff

McLaren and Aughney Return from 2020 Season

San Antonio – The San Antonio Flying Chanclas have announced their field staff for the upcoming 2021 Texas Collegiate League season.

Former Major League Baseball manager John McLaren returns as manager of the Flying Chanclas. He served the same role during the 2020 season. The Texas native managed the Seattle Mariners from July 2007 until June 2008. He also served as the interim manager with the Washington Nationals for three games during the 2011 season. Overall, he has a 70-89 managerial record in the MLB.

McLaren was originally drafted in the 7th round of the 1970 MLB Draft and played seven seasons in the Houston organization. He spent 21 years coaching in the MLB with the Toronto Blue Jays, Boston Red Sox, Cincinnati Reds, and Tampa Bay Devil Rays’ coaching staffs.

Former Major League All-Star Danny Graves will serve as the pitching coach. Graves spent 11 seasons in the MLB primarily as a member of the Cincinnati Reds. He was named a National League All-Star in 2000 and 2004. During the 2004 season, he saved 41 games for Cincinnati.

Graves is the only Vietnamese-born player in the history of Major League Baseball. Most recently, he has served as a radio commentator for the Reds and as an analyst for MLB.com, ESPN Radio, 120 Sports, and MLB Network Radio.

Bryan Aughney returns as the Flying Chanclas’ hitting coach after serving the same role in 2020. Aughney has been the Head Baseball Coach at Our Lady of the Lake University since 2017.

Prior to 2017, Aughney was the Head Baseball Coach at Harlingen High School. He was also the Head Baseball Coach at the University of Texas at Brownville (now known as University of Texas Rio Grande Valley).

Jackson Ryan, Chris Casias, and Geoff Curtin will all serve as coaches for the 2021 Flying Chanclas.

Ryan is the grandson of legendary big leaguer Nolan Ryan and played college baseball at the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor. Born with cerebral palsy, he inspired kids with disabilities to pursue their athletic dreams.

Casias, a San Antonio native, played college baseball at Oklahoma Panhandle State and Southeastern Oklahoma State University. Most recently, he served as the graduate assistant for the Savage Storm baseball team.

Curtin, a San Antonio native, played college baseball at the University of Incarnate Word. He has served as the Head Baseball Coach at McCollum High School for the last four years. Curtin has helped lead the team to two playoff appearances during his tenure.

The San Antonio Flying Chanclas begin the 2021 Texas Collegiate League season on Friday, May 28th against the Victoria Generals. First pitch for Friday’s game is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. at Nelson Wolff Stadium.
