Corpus Christi claimed the South Division first half title Monday night at Wolff Stadium with an 12-0 win over San Antonio.
The Hooks wasted little time getting on the board in Monday's showdown against rehabber Colin Rea. The right-hander walked leadoff man Josh Rojas before Stephen Wrenn reached on a fielding error by third baseman Ty France. Rea would get each of the next two batters out but could not escape the jam. Catcher Jamie Ritchie put the Hooks up 2-0 when followed with a single to left. Alex De Goti capped the rally with a double to right.
After Corpus Christi added another in the second with a Rojas RBI-double, the lead grew to 7-0 in the third with another three-run rally against Rea (0-3). Yordan Alvarez made the score 8-0 in the fourth with an RBI-single to right.
The early offensive onslaught was more than enough for Hooks righty Forrest Whitley, who cruised through his four innings Monday. The former Alamo Heights High School star allowed just two hits and one walk, while punching out a season-high seven. Whitley threw 51 of his 81 pitches for strikes.
Alex Winkelman (3-2) and Akeem Bostick (2nd save) preserved the shutout with a combined five innings of six-hit ball.
Alvarez opened up the lead even more in the eighth with a three-run bomb to center off right-hander T.J. Weir. Chas McCormick capped the scoring with a single in the ninth off righty Gerardo Reyes.
San Antonio (42-28) resumes its four-game series with Corpus Christi (43-26) on AARP $2 Tuesday presented by KCWX. Tuesday's contest will be the first of the season's second half. Cal Quantrill (6-3, 3.94) will get the start for the Missions, while the Hooks counter with fellow righty Yoanys Quiala (6-5, 5.43).
