A costly ninth-inning error sent San Antonio to a 5-4 loss to Midland Sunday afternoon at Wolff Stadium.
The RockHounds ended a 21-inning scoreless streak when Sean Murphy led off the second with a homer to left off Cal Quantrill.
San Antonio responded in the third to take a lead of its own thanks to a two-run double to right by Matthew Batten off righty Brian Howard. The lead did not last long, however, as the RockHounds countered with a two-run rally in the fourth.
In the fifth, Midland upped the lead to 4-2 when Quantrill uncorked a wild pitch, allowing Richie Martin to score from third.
The Missions got one run back in its half of the inning when Josh Naylor stroked a single to left that scored Taylor Kohlwey.
Logan Allen, who was reinstated from the DL earlier in the day, made his return in relief of Quantrill. The All-Star lefty showed no rust, keeping the RockHounds off the board from the sixth through the eighth.
In the bottom of the eighth, San Antonio would tie the score at four with a clutch RBI-single from Kyle Overstreet.
However, in the top of the ninth, Allen (8-3) caught a tough break when Santiago Chávez reached on a throwing error from third baseman Ty France. Chavez would come around to score the go-ahead run when Brett Siddall followed with a double to right.
San Antonio threatened in the bottom half, but could not capitalize on a first and third with one out opportunity against Nolan Blackwood (2-1).
After having three days off for the Texas League All-Star Break, San Antonio (3-3, 45-31) will resume the season's second half Thursday when it opens up a six-game road trip with the first of three against Northwest Arkansas. First pitch from Arvest Ballpark is scheduled for 7:05 PM. Righty Jacob Nix (1-1, 1.27) will get the ball for the Missions in the series opener. The Naturals have yet to name a starter.
