Komar’s Quality Start Not Enough as Missions Fall to Midland 

SAN ANTONIO – The Missions pitching staff got the job done for eight of the nine innings on Wednesday night. Brandon Komar pitched three shutout innings before allowing two runs to score in the fourth inning. The Missions offense struggled to get anything going until the seventh inning. As they scored a run on an RBI single, an outfield assist put an end to the rally. The Missions come up short in Midland by a final score of 2-1.

Through the first three innings of Wednesday night’s game, the fans were treated to a pitcher’s duel between Brandon Komar and Hogan Harris. The two clubs had combined for just four hits in the first three innings.

The Missions had the first scoring opportunity in the top of the third inning. Jorge Ona hit a lead-off single off the Midland southpaw. After a strikeout from Connor Kaiser, Chandler Seagle drew a walk. With two on and one out, Connor Hollis hit a fly out and Thomas Milone struck out to end the inning.

The Midland RockHounds had their first scoring opportunity in the bottom of the fourth inning. The offense capitalized and scored two runs on three hits to grab the lead. JJ Schwarz started off the inning with a single. A ground out advanced him to second base. After recording the second out of the inning. William Simoneit drove in Schwarz with a double to left field. The next batter, Austin Beck, drove in Simoneit with a single to center field. Midland took a 2-0 lead.

Harris was relieved following the fifth inning. In his longest with the RockHounds, he allowed one hit and one walk while striking out five batters. Harris missed the entire 2021 season after undergoing Tommy John surgery. Michael Danielak replaced Harris in the top of the sixth inning.

San Antonio plated their first run of the game in the top of the seventh inning. With Danielak still on the mound, Domingo Leyba drew a walk to start off the inning. After a strikeout from Rodriguez, Tirso Ornelas hit a single to right field. Michael Cantu struck out for out number two. Leyba came around to score after Ona hit a single into right field. On the play, Ornelas was thrown out at second base to end the scoring threat. The Missions cut the deficit in half and trailed 2-1.

Komar was replaced by Jose Quezada to begin the bottom of the seventh inning. Komar records a quality start after allowing two earned runs on eight hits while pitching six innings. Quezada was transferred to the Missions prior to the game after playing for Triple-A El Paso.

After a scoreless inning from Quezada, Michel Baez pitched the eighth inning for the Missions. Despite allowing a walk, he struck out two batters in a scoreless inning of work.

Austin Briggs came to close it out for the RockHounds. He retired all three Missions batters in the top of the ninth inning for his fourth save of the season.

Right-hander Jeff Criswell (0-2, 2.70) is scheduled to start for the RockHounds. First pitch is expected at 7:00 p.m. from Momentum Bank Ballpark.
