San Antonio got strong pitching performances from starter Cal Quantrill and four relievers in its 4-3 win over Tulsa Wednesday night in front of 4,803 at Wolff Stadium.
Military Appreciation Night got off to an inauspicious start for Quantrill as a pair of first-inning errors led to two Driller runs.
San Antonio struck right back against southpaw Devin Smeltzer in the bottom of the frame when Josh Naylor followed a leadoff double by Fernando Tatis Jr. with a two-bagger of his own. Two batters later, catcher Austin Allen tied the score at two with a groundout that plated Naylor.
The Missions took their first lead of the night in the second with a Naylor sacrifice fly to right.
Quantrill shook off the tough defensive luck early to turn in a very impressive start. The former Stanford University star allowed just one earned run on six hits and no walks, while punching out six over five and two-thirds innings. Quantrill's lone mistake on the night came in the sixth when Peter O'Brien tied the game at three with a solo homer to left.
Michael Gettys put San Antonio up for good in the bottom of the sixth, while ending the night for Smeltzer (1-4) in the process, with a double to left.
The pen combo of Trevor Frank (1-0), Eric Yardley, Rowan Wick and Brad Wieck closed the San Antonio victory with three and a third innings of two-hit ball. Wieck struck out the side in the ninth for his fifth save.
San Antonio (29-17) and Tulsa (23-22) face off in a Thursday rubber match on Metro PCS Dollar Night presented by News 4 San Antonio and Cox Media Group. Thursday also marks the return of the Flying Chanclas as well as the Haven for Hope shoe drive. First pitch is slated for 7:05 PM. Seth Simmons (0-0, 1.80) will get the ball for the Chanclas, while the Drillers counter with fellow righty Frank Duncan (1-2, 5.04).
