SAN ANTONIO – Despite a strong effort from Pedro Avila in the beginning of the ballgame, the Corpus Christi Hooks used a four-run fourth inning to defeat the Missions. The Missions scored just one run during a 6-1 loss on Saturday.

Pedro Avila was the starting pitcher for the San Antonio Missions. He faced some trouble right away in the top of the first inning. After retiring the first batter of the game, he allowed a ground-rule double to Joe Perez. Avila left Perez stranded after recording a strike out and a ground out.

Both teams were held scoreless through the first three innings of the game. Corpus Christi changed that in the top of the fourth inning when they batted around their order. To start the inning, Avila allowed back-to-back singles to Perez and Scott Schreiber. Perez scored the first run of the game after an RBI double from Korey Lee. Enmanuel Valdez drove in Schreiber with an RBI single. That was it for Avila as Sam McWilliams replaced him and inherited runners on the corners with no outs.

McWilliams retired the first batter he faced before allowing a double to Cesar Salazar. The Salazar double scored Lee and made it a 3-0 ballgame. Grae Kessinger was the next batter and he drew a walk. Ross Adolph drove in the fourth run of the inning with an RBI single and loaded the bases. McWilliams left those runners stranded after a strike out and a foul out.

The San Antonio Missions scored their first run of the game in the bottom of the fourth inning. Eguy Rosario hit his 31st double of the season to lead off the inning. Kyle Overstreet drew a walk and simultaneously, Rosario advanced to third base on a wild pitch. With runners on the corners and no outs, Dwanya Williams-Sutton drove in Rosario with a sacrifice fly. The Missions trailed 4-1.

San Diego Padres reliver Javy Guerra, who is currently on a rehab assignment, pitched the top of the fifth inning for the Missions. He is currently recovering from a sprained UCL injury. He retired all three batters he faced while reaching 100 mph on his fastball multiple times in the inning.

The Hooks another scoring opportunity in the top of the sixth inning. Facing new pitcher Moises Lugo, after striking out the first batter of the inning, he allowed a single and base on balls to the next two hitters. He recorded out number two before loading the bases with a second base on balls. Lugo left them stranded after recording a pop out.

San Antonio had a chance to cut into the deficit in the bottom of the sixth inning. Eguy Rosario reached base on a base hit followed by a walk from Overstreet. With two on and no outs, Rosario and Overstreet were left stranded after back-to-back strike outs and a ground out.

Corpus Christi increased their lead in the top of the eighth inning. Tom Cosgrove allowed a lead-off double to Salazar followed by back-to-back singles to Grae Kessinger and Ross Adolph. On the Adolph base hit, Salazar came around to score. Cosgrove was replaced by Sam Williams following a fielder’s choice from Julks. Perez drove in Kessinger with an RBI double to make it a 6-1 Hooks lead.
