San Antonio evened its series against Springfield with a 4-1 win Wednesday night at Wolff Stadium courtesy of a fine outing from right-hander Jesse Scholtens.
Like they did in Tuesday's opener, the Cardinals took a first inning lead Wednesday. This time it was John Nogowski, whose single off Scholtens gave Springfield a 1-0 lead.
It did not take the home team long to answer as catcher Austin Allen put the Missions up 2-1 in the second with a two-run blast to right off Matt Pearce. In the bottom of the fourth, San Antonio played the tack on game, expanding the lead to 4-1 with RBI singles from Peter Van Gansen and Matthew Batten.
The three-run cushion proved plenty for Scholtens, who after the first, settled into a tremendous groove. The Fairfield, CA native allowed just five hits and no walks, while striking out six over a club, season-high eight innings. Scholens (7-2) was extremely efficient, needing just 98 pitches to get through eight, 63 of which were strikes. The hurler set the Cards down in order in half of his innings Wednesday.
Chris Huffman (2nd save) worked a clean ninth to close out the Cards.
The Flying Chanclas de San Antonio (23-22, 65-50) return Thursday on Metro PCS Dollar Night presented by News 4 San Antonio and Cox Media Group. First pitch in the series finale with Springfield (19-27, 52-64) is scheduled for 7:05 PM. Chris Paddack (3-1, 1.30) will get the ball for the Chanclas, while the Cards counter with fellow righty Casey Meisner (0-1, 4.15).
