Gleyber Torres Named Midwest League Prospect of the Year

Cubs Shortstop Also Named To Midwest League Post-Season Team
August 24, 2015

South Bend, IN - South Bend Cubs shortstop Gleyber Torres has been named the Midwest League Prospect of the Year.

The 18-year old shortstop is hitting .296 through 112 games with three home runs and 61 runs batted in. The native of Venezuela was the Eastern Division's starting shortstop at the 2015 Midwest League All-Star Game in Peoria.

"Gleyber has made many strides this year both physical and mentally," South Bend manager Jimmy Gonzalez said. "He has been a crucial part of this ball club and has done an outstanding job for us on the field this year."

Torres was also selected as the shortstop for the Midwest League's Post Season All-Star team. The Midwest League's sixteen field managers voted on the post-season awards.

"He's going to do good things because he works hard and has a great desire to succeed," Gonzalez said. "I'm extremely happy for him being honored as prospect of the year."

Baseball America last month released their 2015 Mid-Season Prospect list with Torres ranked 28th.

The Chicago Cubs signed Torres as a non-drafted free agent in 2013.

The South Bend Cubs visit West Michigan tonight at 7:00pm(ET) on 96.1fm WSBT and South Bend Cubs Dot Com.
