Banuelos Strong in RailRiders Debut

SWB Evens Series with 6-1 Win
August 12, 2014

Moosic, Pa. -A night that almost didn't happen due to heavy rain in NEPA saw the skies clear and rain stall just in time for 40-man member Manny Banuelos to take the hill for the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders (Triple-A/New York Yankees) Tuesday night. Banuelos, making his first appearance for Scranton/Wilkes-Barre since May of 2012, spun five innings of one-run ball and scattered two hits while striking out four en route to a 6-1 win over the Louisville Bats (Cincinnati Reds).

Banuelos retired each of his first seven batters faced before allowing his first runner to reach on a bruise in the third. A wild pitch allowed Bryan Anderson to take second before Jason Bourgeois sliced a single to center to give the Bats (60-64) the one-run lead.

The RailRiders had a response, using a crooked number in the home half of the frame to take the lead. A four-pitch walk to Jose Pirela set the table for thunderous run-scoring knocks by Zoilo Almonte and Kyle Roller to tilt the game back in favor of the RailRiders, 2-1. SWB added to the lead in the sixth, using a four-run frame sparked by a costly miscue by outfielder Ruben Gotay. Zelous Wheeler ignited the frame with a leadoff double, and Gotay's missed-catch error on Corban Joseph's fly ball to right allowed Wheeler to plate the inning's first run. RBI extra-base knocks by Rob Segedin and Pirela followed to bring the game to its final resting point of 6-1.

Branden Pinder, Tyler Webb and Diego Moreno bridged the final four innings of the game holding the Bats' offense to three hits over the game's final four innings. Banuelos (1-0) notched the win, while SWB alumnus Brett Marshall (0-9) took the loss. Marshall was tagged for six runs and 11 hits, but struck out seven RailRiders before departing in favor of reliever Chad Rogers in the sixth.

The RailRiders will host the Louisville Bats in the third game of the four game series Wednesday, August 13 at 7:05 p.m. The RailRiders will toss the switch-pitcher Pat Venditte (2-4, 3.56) while Louisville sends the left-hander David Holmberg (1-6, 4.74) to the hill. Aaron Berlin will have the call on radio with the pregame show beginning at 6:35 p.m. on NEPA Sports Radio - The GAME, Northeast PA's largest sports radio network: 100.7 FM, 1340 WYCK-AM, 1400 WICK-AM, 1440 WCDL-AM and 106.7 FM.
