Betts Named Eastern League Player of the Month

Betts Hit a League Leading .430 during the Month of April

Portland, Maine- The Eastern League has named Portland Sea Dogs second baseman Mookie Betts the Eastern League Player of the Month for April.

In 22 games in April, Betts hit .430 (40-for-93) with 10 doubles, one triple, four home runs, 13 RBI, 30 runs scored, a .481 on-base percentage and a .688 slugging percentage. During the month, he led all Eastern League players in batting average (.430), hits (40), extra-base hits (15), total bases (64), runs scored (30), on-base percentage (.481), slugging percentage (.688), and OPS (1.169). He also finished ranked among the monthly leaders in doubles (10-2nd) and stolen bases (10-T-2nd).

The 21 year-old reached safely in all 22 games he played, had at least one hit in 21 of the 22 games he played in during the month and finished the month with 13 multiple hit games, including collecting a season-high four hits on opening night, April 3rd against the Reading Fightin Phils and April 19th against the New Britain Rock Cats. Betts opened the season hitting a home run in his first at-bat on April 3rd at Reading. Dating back to August 2nd, 2013, Betts has reached safely in 57 straight regular season games and 63 straight including the Carolina League Playoffs. Betts hit safely in 17 straight games from April 9th through April 30th, it was the longest hitting streak for the Sea Dogs since Brett Roneberg hit safely in 18 consecutive games in 2004. Betts was honored as the Eastern League Player of the Week for the week of April 3rd through the 13th hitting .457 (16-for-35) with five doubles, a triple, a home run, four RBI and 11 runs scored with a .743 slugging percentage during the week.

Betts was the Red Sox Minor League Offensive Player of the Year in 2013 hitting a combined .314 between Low-A Greenville and High-A Salem with 36 doubles, 15 home runs, and 65 RBI. He enters the 2014 season as the seventh ranked prospect in the Red Sox organization by Baseball America. The Brentwood, Tennessee resident was drafted by the Red Sox in the fifth round of the June 2011 Draft.

Betts is the 12th Sea Dog in franchise history and the first since Juan Carlos Linares in August 2013 to earn an Eastern League Player of the Month award.
