Owens, Betts Selected to MLB All-Star Futures Game

Portland, Maine- Portland Sea Dogs' left-handed pitcher Henry Owens has been selected to participate in the 2014 SiriusXM All-Star Futures Game. Former Sea Dog Mookie Betts was also selected for the All-Star event.

The 16th annual SiriusXM All-Star Futures Game will take place at 5 p.m. ET on Sunday, July 13, at Target Field in Minneapolis, and it can be seen live on MLB.com and MLB Network.

Major League Baseball, in conjunction with the Major League Baseball Scouting Bureau, MLB.com, Baseball America, and the 30 Major League Clubs, selected the 25 players currently on each team; the U.S. Team and the World Team. Each Major League organization is represented and the World Team features players from 10 different countries and territories outside the 50 United States. Players from all full-season Minor Leagues were eligible to participate.  

In 14 games this season, Owens has produced a 9-3 record with a 1.99 ERA (19 ER/ 86 IP) and 89 strikeouts. He leads the league in ERA (1.99), strikeouts (89), complete games (3), shutouts (2), lowest batting average (.178), and is tied for the league lead in wins (9). He tossed a rain shortened no-hitter on Opening Day against the Reading Fightin Phils. The 21 year-old established a new Sea Dogs franchise record tossing 27.2 consecutive scoreless innings from May 19 through June 14. Owens entered the season as Boston's top pitching prospect and number two prospect overall, according to Baseball America. The Huntington Beach, California native was selected by the Red Sox in the supplemental round (36th overall) of the June 2011 draft.

Betts appeared in 54 games with the Sea Dogs before receiving a promotion to Triple-A Pawtucket. At the time of his call-up, Betts was hitting a league best .355 (76-for-214). He also paced the league in hits (76) and runs scored (56) and finished among the top five leaders in stolen bases (2nd), doubles (2nd), OBP (2nd), slugging percentage (4th), extra-base hits (3rd), total bases (4th), and walks (2nd). The Brentwood, Tennessee native is ranked as the #5 prospect in the Red Sox system and the 75th overall according to Baseball America.
