Sea Dogs Announce 20th Season All-Time Team

Portland, Maine- The Portland Sea Dogs have announced their All-Time Team in celebration of their 20th season of play. The team was voted on by fans throughout the 2013 season.

The team consists of one player at each position including three outfielders, along with two right-handed pitchers, two left-handed pitchers, a relief pitcher, and a manager. Additionally, the two players who received the most votes who did not win their position were added to the team in the DH and the utility spots.

The team includes 15 total players and a manager. Seven of the 16 total people on the list are from when the Sea Dogs were affiliated with Florida Marlins and nine from the Red Sox affiliation. All 16 have been reached the Major Leagues including ten players who have been Major League All-Stars.

Catcher:
Charles Johnson
- Johnson hit .264 with 28 home runs and 80 RBI for the Sea Dogs in 1994 and was named to the Eastern League All-Star squad. His 28 home runs led the league and were the most by an Eastern League catcher since Tony Pena hit 34 in 1979. He went on to become a five time National League Gold Glove Award Winner, and was named to the 1997 and 2001 Major League All-Star Team. He was inducted in the Portland Sea Dogs Hall of Fame in 2005.

First Base:
Kevin Millar
- Millar ranks among the franchise leaders (both single season and career) in nearly every offensive category. In 1997, he earned Eastern League MVP honors putting together one of the finest seasons in franchise history hitting .342 with 32 HR and 131 RBI. In his Sea Dog career he appeared in 268 games with a .328 average, 51 home runs, and 220 RBI. He reached base safely in a Minor League Baseball record 71 straight games (47 with Portland). Millar was a member of the 2004 Red Sox World Series Championship team and was inducted into the Sea Dogs Hall of Fame in 2006.

Second Base: 
Dustin Pedroia
- Pedroia hit .324 with 39 runs scored and 40 RBI in 66 games with the Sea Dogs in 2005. He was selected to the 2005 Eastern League Post-Season All-Star squad and was honored as the 2005 Red Sox Minor League Offensive Player of the Year. In 2007, he earned American League Rookie of the Year honors and helped the Red Sox capture the World Series Championship. In 2008, he became the first Sea Dogs player to earn American League MVP honors (.326 AVG., 17 HR, 83 RBI). Pedroia is a four-time American League All-Star and has collected two Gold Glove Awards.

Shortstop:
Hanley Ramirez
- Ramirez spent parts of the 2004 and 2005 seasons with the Sea Dogs. He appeared in 154 games with a .279 average with 11 home runs and 67 RBI. He was selected to participate in the 2005 MLB Futures Game; he was also selected to both the 2005 Eastern League Mid and Post-Season All-Star teams. In 2006, he was named the National League Rookie of the Year with the Marlins. Ramirez is a three-time National League All-Star.  

Third Base:
Kevin Youkilis
- Youkilis appeared in 94 games for the Sea Dogs in 2003, where he hit .327 with 6 home runs and 37 RBI. He holds the Sea Dogs franchise record with a .487 On Base Percentage. He reached base safely in 92 of the 94 games he played for the Sea Dogs including a franchise record 62 straight. Youkilis would go on to reach base safely in his first nine games in Triple-A Pawtucket to tie Kevin Millar's Minor League Baseball record of 71 straight games. Youkilis was selected to play in the 2003 MLB Futures Game and Eastern League All-Star Game. He was a member of the Red Sox World Championship teams in 2004 and 2007. Youkilis is a three-time American League All-Star and earned a Gold Glove Award at first base in 2007.

Outfield:
Jacoby Ellsbury
- Ellsbury joined the Sea Dogs at the end of the 2006 season where he appeared in 50 games hitting .308 and helped the Sea Dogs capture their first Eastern League Championship. Ellsbury returned to the Sea Dogs in 2007 and hit .452 in 17 games earning a promotion to Triple-A Pawtucket. In 67 total games with the Sea Dogs Ellsbury hit .347 with 45 runs scored, and 20 doubles. He was a member of the Red Sox 2007 World Championship team. In 2011 he was an American League All-Star, Silver Slugger Award Winner, Gold Glove Award Winner, and finished second in the American League MVP voting. He holds the Red Sox single season stolen base record with 70 set in 2009.

Josh Reddick - Reddick spent parts of three seasons with the Sea Dogs (2007-2009) appearing in 98 games. His best season came in 2009 where he hit .277 in 63 games with 17 doubles and 13 home runs. He homered in four consecutive games from April 10-14, 2009, he is one of just two players in franchise history in accomplish the feat. Reddick ranked 10th in the American League in 2012 with 32 home runs leading the Oakland Athletics to a playoff berth. He also captured a Gold Glove Award for his work in the outfield in 2012.

Mark Kotsay - Kotsay was the 1997 Eastern League Rookie of the Year compiling a .306 average with 20 home runs, 77 RBI and a league leading 103 runs in 114 games with the Sea Dogs. He was selected as both an Eastern League All-Star and a Double-A All-Star in 1997. Kotsay is a veteran of 17 Major League seasons with a career average of .276. He was inducted into the Sea Dogs Hall of Fame in 2009.

Right-Handed Starting Pitchers:
Josh Beckett
- In 13 games with the Sea Dogs in 2001, Beckett compiled an 8-1 record with a 1.86 ERA and 102 strikeouts in 74.1 innings pitched. He was named the 2001 Baseball America, Topps, USA Today and Sporting News Minor League Player of the Year, posting a 14-1 record with 1.54 ERA and 203 strikeouts in 140 innings pitched between Single-A Brevard County and Double-A Portland. Beckett tossed the first seven innings of a combined no-hitter on August 13, 2001 for the Sea Dogs against the Binghamton Mets. Beckett was the 2003 World Series MVP with the Marlins and the 2007 ALCS MVP with the Red Sox. He is a three-time Major League Baseball All-Star and was inducted into the Sea Dogs Hall of Fame in 2011.

Clay Buchholz - Buchholz produced a 7-2 record with a 1.77 ERA in 16 games with the Sea Dogs in 2007. He was named the Red Sox Minor League Pitcher of the Year in 2007 and made his Major League debut with the Red Sox in August. He tossed a no-hitter against the Orioles in his second Major League start. Buchholz returned to Portland for two games in 2008, where he went 1-0 with a 1.80 ERA. Buchholz was named the Red Sox 2012 Pitcher of the Year by the Boston Baseball Writers. He is a two-time American League All-Star.

Left-Handed Starting Pitchers:
Jon Lester
- Lester was the 2005 Eastern League Pitcher of the Year posting an 11-6 record with a 2.61 ERA with a league leading 163 strikeouts in 148.1 innings pitched with the Sea Dogs. He was also named the Red Sox 2005 Minor League Pitcher of the Year. Additionally, he was named to the Topps Double-A All-Star team and both the Eastern League Mid and Post-Season All-Star squads. Lester is a two-time American League All-Star. He fired a no-hitter on May 19, 2008 against the Kansas City Royals.

Felix Doubront - Doubront posted a 13-6 record with a 3.08 ERA in 35 games with the Sea Dogs over three seasons (2009-2011). He was the Sea Dogs 2009 Pitcher of the Year notching an 8-6 record and ranked second in the league with a 3.35 ERA and team high 101 strikeouts. In 2012, he led the Red Sox with 167 strikeouts and tied for the team lead with 11 wins.

Relief Pitcher:
Daniel Bard
- In 31 games as a reliever with the Sea Dogs in 2008, Bard posted a 4-1 record with a 1.99 ERA and 64 strikeouts in 49.2 innings of work. He was named the Red Sox Minor League Pitcher of the Year in 2008. Bard established new Red Sox single-season records for holds in both 2010 (32) and 2011 (34). He was honored as the Red Sox Fireman of the Year in 2010 by the Boston Baseball Writers.

Designated Hitter:
Adrian Gonzalez
- Gonzalez played in 138 games for the Sea Dogs in 2002 hitting .266 with 34 doubles, 17 home runs, and 96 RBI. He was selected to the SportsTicker Eastern League All-Teen team. Gonzalez is a four-time Major League All-Star and is a three-time Gold Glove Award Winner. He was selected to the Sea Dogs Hall of Fame in 2012.

Utility:
Edgar Renteria
- Renteria appeared in 135 games for the Sea Dogs in 1995 with a .268 average, 7 home runs, 68 RBI, and 30 stolen bases. Renteria is a five-time Major League Baseball All-Star and collected two Gold Glove Awards. The veteran of 16 Major League seasons was named the 2010 World Series MVP with the San Francisco Giants. He was inducted into the Sea Dogs Hall of Fame in 2007.

Manager:
Carlos Tosca
- Carlos Tosca managed the Sea Dogs from 1994-1996 and produced a career record of 229-195 (.540) Tosca led the Sea Dogs to the Eastern League Northern Division Championship in 1995 and 1996. In 1996, he was named Eastern League Manager of the Year, and Baseball America Minor League Manager of the Year. Tosca managed the Blue Jays from 2002-2004 and currently serves as the bench coach with the Atlanta Braves. Tosca was inducted into the Sea Dogs Hall of Fame in 2005.
