Altoona opens up series with 5-3 win over Erie

ALTOONA, Pa--- The SeaWolves fell 5-3 in the series opener against the Altoona Curve Monday at Peoples Natural Gas Field to lose their fifth game in a row.

 

Altoona jumped on the board first in the bottom of the second inning. Jordan George singled in Jin-De Jhang off of Erie starter Artie Lewicki. Curve second baseman Michael Suchy followed that up with a double, then Elvis Escobar's stand up triple to right brought in two runs to make it 3-0 Altoona.

 

Jerrick Suiter smacked a home run to center in the third to extend the lead to 4-0 Curve.

 

The SeaWolves made it closer in the top of the fourth thanks to a sacrifice fly to center from Grayson Greiner that scored A.J. Simcox from third to make it 4-1.

 

Erie cut the lead down to two after an RBI double from Zack Cox brought in Gabriel Quintana off of starter Brandon Waddell.

 

The SeaWolves loaded up the bases with no outs in the sixth inning, but only managed to score one run on a sacrifice fly to center from Christin Stewart. After 5 1/2, Altoona led 4-3.

 

Altoona Curve first baseman Connor Joe singled in Suiter in the eighth to extend the lead to two at 5-3.

 

Lewicki (9-4) worked in his longest outing of the season, tossing 7.2 innings and only allowing three earned on eight hits in the loss. Brandon Waddell (1-2) picked up his first win of the season for Altoona.

 

Brandon Cumpton held Erie in the ninth to earn his first save of the season.

 

The SeaWolves return to Peoples Natural Gas Field Tuesday at 7:00 PM to continue the series. RHP Beau Burrows (4-3, 4.63 ERA) will face Altoona's RHP Alex McRae (8-4, 3.53 ERA).
