August 28, 2017

[Empty Body]

The SeaWolves dropped another heartbreaker as they fell in 12 innings to the Binghamton Rumble Ponies, 5-4, on Monday night.
Binghamton jumped ahead in the first inning against Erie starter Matt Hall. L.J. Mazzilli and Matt Oberste led off with back-to-back walks. Peter Alonso hit into a fielder's choice that moved Mazzilli to third. David Thompson singled home Mazzilli for a 1-0 lead.
The SeaWolves responded in the second against Ponies starter Ricky Knapp. Christin Stewart led off with a walk and Steven Moya doubled to the wall in right-center. With two outs, Gabriel Quintana lined a single to right, plating both baserunners for a 2-1 lead.
The Rumble Ponies tied the game in the third as Mazzilli led off and connected on a solo home run to left to make it a 2-2 game.
Erie regained the lead in the fourth as Moya led off and clubbed a solo home run to left for a 3-2 lead. The home run for Moya was his 11th.
The SeaWolves extended the lead in the fifth, once again, thanks to a two-out hit. A.J. Simcox led off with a single and scored from first on a two-out Dawel Lugo double making it 4-2.
Binghamton closed the gap to a run in the sixth against reliever Victor Alcántara. Kevin Kaczmarski led off with a triple and scored on a Mazzilli double to make it 4-3.
The Ponies then tied the game in the seventh. Peter Alonso led off with a double and came in to score on a one-out Tomás Nido base hit. Erie summoned Adam Ravenelle and he got Erie out of the jam, inducing an inning-ending double play with the bases loaded.
The game remained tied until the last of the 12th. Gerson Moreno, who worked a perfect 11th inning, retired the first two batters of the 12th before giving up a single to Kaczmarski and a walk to Gustavo Nunez. Moreno was lifted for Paul Voelker. Voelker walked pinch hitter Luis Guillorme to load the bases for the top of the lineup. Mazzilli came up with his fourth hit of the night, a game-winning single to center, giving the Ponies a 5-4 victory.
Cory Burns (2-2) earned the win for the Ponies tossing a scoreless 12th.
Moreno (0-3) took the loss for Erie allowing a run on one hit with a walk and two strikeouts in 1.2 innings of work.
Hall took his second straight no-decision. He allowed two runs on four hits with five walks and five strikeouts in five innings.
The loss for the SeaWolves was their seventh straight to the Rumble Ponies.
Erie and Binghamton meet in the second game of the series on Tuesday night at NYSEG Stadium at 6:35 p.m. Lefty Tyler Alexander (8-8, 5.08 ERA) takes the mound for Erie against RHP Marcos Molina (2-7, 3.65 ERA).
