The SeaWolves opened the 2018 season with a 7-1 victory over the Reading Fightin Phils on a chilly night at First Energy Stadium.
The SeaWolves jumped ahead in the second inning against Reading starter Ranger Suarez. With one out, Gabriel Quintana crushed a solo home run to straight away center for a 1-0 lead. Kenny Wilson followed with a walk and stole second. With two outs, A.J. Simcox singled home Wilson for a 2-0 lead. Sergio Alcantara followed with an RBI double down the left field line, plating Simcox for a 3-0 lead. After a Troy Montgomery walk, Jake Robson singled home Alcantara, capping a four-run inning for the 'Wolves.
Erie extended the lead in the top of the fourth. Alcantara led off the inning with his second double of the game. Montgomery followed with a bunt single, putting a pair on for Robson. Robson doubled home Alcantara for a 5-0 lead. Robson would finish the night with three hits and two RBI in his Double-A debut. Jake Rogers followed with a two-run single, giving the SeaWolves a 7-0 advantage.
The lone Reading run came in the bottom of the seventh against Erie reliever Matt Hall. Cornelius Randolph led off with a double. Hall would strike out the next two batters before walking Emmanuel Marrero, extending the inning for the top of the lineup. Zach Coppola singled home Randolph making it a 7-1 game.
Erie starter Beau Burrows (1-0) was brilliant in his first start, earning the win. He shut out the Fightins in five innings of work, allowing just one hit while striking out six batters. It was Burrows second career win over Reading and is now 2-0 at First Energy Stadium.
Suarez (0-1) took the loss for Reading allowing seven runs on nine hits with three walks and two strikeouts in three-plus innings of work.
The win marked the SeaWolves third straight Opening Day road win.
The SeaWolves and Fightin Phils meet in the second game of the series on Friday night at 7:15 p.m. RHP Sandy Baez (0-0, 0.00 ERA) takes the mound for Erie against RHP Harold Arauz (0-0, 0.00 ERA).
