May 27, 2013

Harrisburg, PA - Jeff Howell hit a two-run home run in the bottom of the eighth inning to break a 1-1 tie, and the Harrisburg Senators defeated the Reading Fightin Phils 3-1 on Monday afternoon at Metro Bank Park. The win secured a series victory, as the Senators took three out of four.

The Senators jumped on the board first in the third inning, as Steven Souza Jr. drove in Brian Goodwin with an RBI double off the left-center field fence. Souza went 2-for-3 with a walk on the day. It remained 1-0 until the seventh, when Reading's Miguel Abreu led off with a triple and came in to score on Derrick Mitchell's sacrifice-fly.

Caleb Clay pitched six and two-thirds innings for the Senators and struck out a career-high nine. The right-hander gave up just five hits and the lone Reading run.

With one out in the eighth, Jose Lozada drew a walk to bring up Howell. On an 0-2 pitch, he launched it over the left-center field fence for his third homer of the season. Howell went 3-for-3 with a walk, and Lozada added a pair of hits himself.

Tyler Herron earned his second win with an inning and two-thirds of scoreless relief. Aaron Barrett picked up his eighth save with a scoreless ninth inning.
