Alex Wells Named SAL Player of the Month

SALISBURY, MD - After an untouchable five starts, the Delmarva Shorebirds are pleased to announce that left-handed pitcher Alex Wells has been named the South Atlantic League Player of the Month for July. Both position players and pitchers were eligible for the honor.
The 20-year-old from Newcastle, New South Wales kept SAL bats at bay all month, going 3-0 with a spotless 0.00 ERA over five straight quality starts. The Orioles' No. 16 prospect scattered 13 hits, walked none, and struck out 26 in 31 innings.
Wells has been one of the Sally League's top hurlers since Opening Day. Through 21 starts, the All-Star is 9-5 with a 2.50 ERA, good for second in the league. He owns the lowest WHIP (0.95) and walk-per-nine inning ratio (0.76) in the circuit. Wells has been on the bump to begin four of the Shorebirds' seven team shutouts, three of which came in July.
Before a loss at West Virginia on August 4, Wells had strung together seven quality starts since the beginning of the second half, giving him 15 on the season. He put together a stretch of 36 consecutive scoreless innings from June 30 through July 30 and hasn't walked anybody in 47 innings since June 25.
The Orioles signed Wells as an international free agent out of Australia in 2015. His signing scouts were Brett Ward and Mike Snyder.
Wells becomes the second Shorebird to earn South Atlantic League laurels this season. Outfielder Jake Ring was named SAL Player of the Week for April 6 through 16, the first weekly honor of the year.
