Delmarva Ekes Out Series Win

Another 3-2 victory over West Virginia
July 9, 2014

Salisbury, MD - The Delmarva Shorebirds did just enough to earn a series win from the West Virginia Power with a 3-2 victory on Wednesday afternoon. A day after a walkoff 3-2 win, the Shorebirds won by that score in a tightly contested battle. With the victory, Delmarva (49-41) is back over .500 in the second half at 11-10.

The game began with a seesaw first two frames. West Virginia led at 1-0 and at 2-1, but Delmarva had immediate responses in both instances. Chance Sisco blooped a single to center to score Jeff Kemp to make it 1-1 in the first inning. In the second, Anthony Caronia walked and stole second base to set up an RBI line drive from Josh Hart.

The Shorebirds edged in front in the fourth inning. After a walk to Jared Breen, Lorenzo bounced a slow roller to second base, reaching on an infield single. Caronia followed with a go-ahead flare single to left field, as Breen came home to put Delmarva on top, 3-2.

Luis Gonzalez battled through the first two innings, giving up a single tally in each frame. After that, he managed three more innings in the start without allowing another run. Garrett Cortright followed with three perfect innings of relief, retiring all nine batters he faced. Austin Urban closed out the victory, getting three groundball outs in the ninth.

Gonzalez improved to 4-0 with the victory, while Urban picked up his third save of the season. Justin Topa took the loss for West Virginia, falling to 3-6. Sisco extended his hitting streak to 10 games with a 1-for-4 day in the win.

Delmarva will now travel to New Jersey to square off with the Lakewood BlueClaws for four games. Nick Cunningham (1-0, 5.40) will start the opener against BlueClaws' righty Jon Prosinski (2-2, 4.43). First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 pm at FirstEnergy Park.
