SALISBURY, MD - The Greenville Drive jumped in front early with four runs in the top of the first and never looked back, burying the Delmarva Shorebirds 12-3 on Sunday afternoon at Arthur W. Perdue Stadium.
Lorenzo Cedrola led off the game with a double, and Jagger Rusconi walked right behind him. Ryan Scott beat out an infield single to load the bases, and Chris Madera's infield roll to third brought home Cedrola to get the Drive (23-12) on the scoreboard. Tyler Hill followed with a run-scoring single, another run came home on a double play groundball, and Nick Sciortino capped the scoring with an RBI base knock, making it 4-0 Greenville before the Shorebirds (15-20) had a chance to bat.
The Drive added another in the third when Hill scored on a two-out error. In the fourth, Hill singled home a pair with two outs and scored on another error, making it 8-0.
Delmarva got a run back in the bottom of the sixth. Collin Woody swung on the first pitch of the frame and belted one off the ads in left center for his first home run of the season. It was the second round-tripper of Woody's career and his first since his fourth game as a pro with the Aberdeen IronBirds in Vermont last June 29.
Greenville batted around and plated four more in the top of the eighth. Jerry Downs led off with a double and scored three batters later on a two-out single by Rusconi. Ryan Scott hit a can of corn to left field that glanced off third baseman Alejandro Juvier's glove for a two-base error, putting men on second and third. Chris Madera doubled home two runs and scored two batters later on a Mitch Gunsolus single, putting the Drive up 12-1.
The Shorebirds put up a fight in the bottom of the ninth. Frank Crinella got on base on a one-out error and came around to score on a Juvier double to the left field corner. Irving Ortega followed with a single, and Ryan McKenna hit a single to right to score Juvier. Ortega was thrown out at third base by Madera on the play, and after a Jake Ring single Chris Clare grouned into the game-ending putout at short.
Matthew Gorst (1-1) earned the win in relief for the Drive, pitching three innings of one-run, three-hit ball out of the bullpen. Starter Darwinzon Hernandez only lasted four scoreless innings, giving up two hits, walking four, and striking out seven. Travis Seabrooke (1-2) took the loss after giving up eight runs (six earned) on nine hits in four innings. Both of his losses this season have come at the hands of the Drive.
The top eight hitters in the Greenville order combined for 14 hits on the afternoon, including 12 singles and five infield singles. Hill led the way, going 4-for-5 with two runs and three RBIs. Rusconi also drove in three runs, while Rusconi and Scott scored three runs apiece.
McKenna finished 2-for-3 with a pair of walks and an RBI to pace the Delmarva attack. Juvier went 2-for-4 with an RBI double and a run, while Crinella tripled in the second.
Woody's home run in the sixth inning was the Shorebirds' first at Perdue Stadium since April 17, a Jake Ring fifth-inning solo shot in a 9-5 win over Greensboro.
