Grasshoppers Edge Shorebirds, 6-5

Nathans hits his ninth homer of season

Greensboro, NC - The Greensboro Grasshoppers (4-5) took their first lead in the sixth inning and held the Delmarva Shorebirds (5-4) scoreless over the final six innings to win 6-5 at NewBridge Bank Park on Friday night. 

The Shorebirds jumped on Greensboro starter Austin Brice in the first inning. Lead off hitter George Barber singled to center. Then, Tucker Nathans hit a towering home run to right field, his ninth of the year, to put the Shorebirds in front 2-0. With two outs, Joel Hutter and Roderick Bernadina drew back-to-back walks. Then, Adrian Marin ripped a double off the left field wall to lift the Shorebirds in front 4-0.

Greensboro responded with three runs in the first two innings against Shorebirds starter Mark Blackmar. In the second, Blake Barber hit a sacrifice fly to left to score Cody Keefer. Anthony Gomez hit a chopper to third that bounced over the glove of Hutter to score Jose Behar to trim the deficit to 4-3. 

The Shorebirds tacked on a run in the top of the fourth. Bernadina drew a one out walk and Chase Weems drove him in with a two out single to center field.

Greensboro pulled within a run in the third on a double by Matt Juengel.

Shorebirds starter Mark Blackmar lasted five innings and did not factor into the decision. He surrendered nine hits and four runs. 

In the sixth inning, the Grasshoppers took their first lead of the game on a two run single to right field by Anthony Gomez.

The Shorebirds did not score over the final six innings of the game. Greensboro relievers Jheyson Manzueta and Ronald Barnes held the Shorebirds to just one hit over the final six innings.

Reliever Bennett Parry, who was pinned with the loss, went the final three innings for Delmarva and yielded four hits and two runs. Parry struck out five and walked one. 

Greensboro reliever Manzueta earned the win over four shutout innings. 

The Shorebirds and Grasshoppers play game three of the series on Saturday, June 28 at 7:00pm.
