Ninth Inning Rally Sparks Shorebirds, 2-1

Winning streak alive at four games
April 18, 2014

Greensboro, NC - The Delmarva Shorebirds were down to their final strike on two occasions, but they kept their winning streak alive with a ninth inning rally. Trey Mancini delivered a two-run single with two outs in the ninth to squeak by Greensboro 2-1 on Friday night. The Shorebirds have now won four straight games to move to 8-7 on the season.

Mitch Horacek made another solid start for Delmarva, though he settled for a no-decision for the second straight outing. The Shorebirds starter went six innings, surrendering one run on five hits.

Victor Castro was responsible for the only run off of Horacek. Leading off the third inning, Castro smashed a towering shot over the left field wall. The solo home run gave Greensboro a 1-0 lead.

The 1-0 score held until the ninth inning. Delmarva missed several opportunities in the previous frames, stranding the tying run on second three times. In the ninth, the Shorebirds finally came through with the timely base hit with runners in scoring position.

The rally started slowly with two outs in the ninth. Federico Castagnini reached on a slow roller to third base. Gregory Lorenzo followed with another infield single, this one deep in the hole at shortstop. Josh Hart then reached on a fielding error by the Grasshoppers shortstop Justin Bohn.

With the bases loaded and two outs, Trey Mancini punched a single up the middle past the diving effort of Avery Romero. Castagnini and Lorenzo both scored to give Delmarva the 2-1 lead.

Jimmy Yacabonis came on for the save situation in the bottom of the ninth. Yacabonis flirted with disaster by walking both Felix Munoz and Victor Castro. After a wild pitch, the Shorebirds closer intentionally walked Justin Bohn to load the bases with two outs. Yacabonis then struck out Juan Avila looking to finish off the Shorebirds victory.

Dylan Rheault (3-0) earned the victory after two scoreless innings in relief. Matt Milroy took the blown save and loss for Greensboro despite both runs being unearned. Yacabonis recorded his fourth save of the season.

With the four-game winning streak, the Shorebirds have a winning record for the first time this year. Delmarva will go for the series sweep of Greensboro on Saturday night. Right-hander Sebastian Vader (1-1, 3.75) will face off against Grasshoppers' righty Max Garner (2-0, 2.76). First pitch at NewBridge Bank Park is scheduled for 7:00 pm.
