Pitching Leads Lakewood to 4-1 Win

Sander Beck strong in two scoreless innings

Lakewood, NJ - The Lakewood BlueClaws (25-36) held the Delmarva Shorebirds (22-39) scoreless over the first five innings and scored three runs between the fifth and sixth innings to win game one, 4-1, at FirstEnergy Park on Friday night. 

Lakewood got on the board first in the third inning. Chace Numata hit a one out single and scored on a double to right-center field by Jiandido Tromp.

The BlueClaws extended the lead to 2-0 in the fifth inning. Numata reached on a two out double and scored on a triple to the right-center field wall by Tromp.

The Shorebirds got on the board in the sixth inning. Kris Richards led off with a double to the wall in left field. He later scored on a grounder to third by Adrian Marin.

Lakewood extended the lead to 4-1 in the bottom of the sixth. JP Crawford reached second to open the inning on a dropped fly ball in left-center by Gregory Lorenzo. He reached third on a wide pickoff throw by Juan Guzman. Then, William Carmona hit a line drive triple through the right-center field alley to score Crawford. Later in the inning, Brian Pointer dropped a suicide squeeze bunt to score Carmona.

Shorebirds starter Juan Guzman went six innings and yielded six hits and two earned runs.

Lakewood starter Jon Prosinski held the Shorebirds to three hits and no runs over five innings to earn the win. Two Lakewood relievers, Jeff Broussard and Chris Burgess held the Shorebirds to five hits and one run over the final four innings. 

Sander Beck entered in the seventh inning and tossed two scoreless innings. He yielded just one hit.  

The Shorebirds and BlueClaws play game two of the series on Saturday, August 24 at 7:05pm. RHP Luc Rennie is the scheduled starter.
