Shorebirds Take Game One from RiverDogs, 3-2

Juan Guzman tosses three scoreless innings to earn win

Salisbury, Md. - The Delmarva Shorebirds (14-15) squeezed past the Charleston RiverDogs (14-13) 3-2 on Saturday night in front of 7,869 fans at Arthur W. Perdue Stadium, the largest crowd of the season. With the win, the Shorebirds snapped a season long four-game losing streak. 

The Shorebirds scored first in the third inning. Charleston starter Gabe Encinas, who entered with a 0.31 ERA, walked the first two batters and hit Nik Balog to load the bases. Then, Lucas Herbst hit a one hopper to second base that scored Tucker Nathans. Two batters later, Adrian Marin legged out an infield single to score Torsten Boss.

The RiverDogs cut the deficit to 2-1 in the fourth inning on a groundout RBI by Yeicok Calderon.

Charleston tied the game in the sixth inning on a two out single by Calderon through the right side of the infield to score Jake Cave. 

The Shorebirds regained the lead in the seventh. Nathans hit a lead off single to left field. After moving to second a sacrifice bunt by Boss, he scored on a single to right field by Christian Walker.

Shorebirds reliever Juan Guzman earned the win over three scoreless innings. He did not allow a single hit. 

Shorebirds starter Brady Wager went six innings and gave up just four hits and one earned run. 

Charleston reliever Ben Paullus was pinned with the loss in 3.1 innings pitched.

The Shorebirds and RiverDogs play game two of the series on Sunday afternoon at 2:05pm. RHP Mark Blackmar is the scheduled starter for Delmarva.
