Baby Bombers fall to ValleyCats, 6-1

After having their four-game win streak snapped on Friday night, the Staten Island Yankees (30-31) dropped a second straight game to the Tri-City ValleyCats (42-20), 6-1.

The starting pitchers from both sides kept the bats quiet until the third inning as the ValleyCats' Jason Martin drew a walk from Staten Island starter David Palladino (L, 5-5). Martin got all the way to third following two miscues by Palladino, including a throwing error on a pickoff attempt and a wild pitch. Martin then came home to score on a Nick Tanielu single to center field to put the first run on the board in the ball game.

The ValleyCats added to their lead in the fourth inning as Ariel Ovando drew a walk followed by Alfredo Gonzalez's third home run of the season that extended their lead to 3-0.

Both teams kept the game moving until the seventh inning as Ty McFarland finally got the Baby Bombers on the board with his fourth home run of the year to cut the ValleyCats' lead to 3-1.

Tri-City answered right back in the top of the eighth inning as Houston Astros 2014 first round pick Derek Fisher hit his first home run of season with a solo shot that bounced off the top of the wall in the right field gap.

The ValleyCats added some insurance runs in the ninth inning. Ovando singled to right field followed by Gonzalez drawing a walk from Yankee reliever Rony Bautista. Both runners advanced to scoring position as Bautista threw a wild pitch with Martin at the plate. Juan Santana then singled to left field to bring home Ovando. Fisher followed with his second extra base hit of the game with a double to left that plated Gonzalez to give Tri-City a 6-1 lead.

The two teams wrap up the series on Sunday at 4 p.m. as the Baby Bombers host Military Appreciation Night featuring free camo jerseys for the first 2,500 fans in the ballpark.
