Breen homers twice as Yankees finish sweep of Tigers

August 14, 2014

After taking both games of Wednesday's doubleheader, the Staten Island Yankees (30-29) defeat the Connecticut Tigers (31-29) to pull off the sweep, 5-2.

The Baby Bombers took control of the ball game from the start. In the second inning, Austin Aune singled, then was followed by a towering Chris Breen home run, his fifth of the season. Later in the inning, Jose Javier tripled on a ball to the gap in left center field. Collin Slaybaugh then drove Javier home on a single to center to make the score 3-0 in favor of Staten Island.

Breen struck again in the bottom of the fourth inning with his second home run of the game to extend the Yankees lead to 4-0.

The Baby Bombers were not done scoring as the team pushed across one more run in the fifth inning. Newly-named all-star Connor Spencer collected one of his three base hits in the game but was put out at second base as Isaias Tejeda grounded into a force at second base. On an attempt to turn a double play on Tejeda's ground ball, Connecticut second baseman Will Maddox made a throwing error that allowed Tejeda to reach second. Tejeda then stole third base to put himself in prime position to score on the ensuing wild pitch by Connecticut reliever Josh Laxer to bring the score to 5-0.

The Tigers finally got on the board in the top of the seventh inning, breaking up Staten Island's shutout. Maddox singled up the middle followed by Kasey Coffman hitting his first home run of the season.

Yankee reliever Andury Acevedo (W, 3-2) picked up the win while Ethan Carnes (SV, 1) earned his first save of the season after tossing three innings.
