Austin Fleet Named California League Pitcher of the Week

April 23, 2013

SAN JOSE, CA- San Jose Giants right-handed pitcher Austin Fleet was named California League Pitcher of the Week for the week ending on April 21. At Inland Empire on Thursday Night, Fleet came on to pitch four perfect frames in relief of injured Kyle Crick, striking out six, as the Giants defeated the 66ers, 5-1. Fleet, who turned 26 on Wednesday, also threw 2 1/3 scoreless innings Monday against Stockton. Fleet has allowed just three hits and one walk to the 30 batters he's faced this season.

A 16th-round draft pick from Coastal Carolina University in 2010, Fleet compiled a 3.83 ERA in 41 appearances last season for the Double-A Richmond Flying Squirrels. This season he has been a strong presence on a San Jose staff that currently leads the California League with a 3.08 ERA.

Fleet is also the first San Jose Giant to receive Player of the Week honors in 2013. During the 2012 season, the Giants had three California League Players of the Week:

April 30 - May 6 - LHP Ryan Bradley

July 9 -15 - RHP Taylor Rogers

August 13 - August - LHP Kelvin Marte

The San Jose Giants have started their 2013 season with a league-best 13-5 record. After winning three of four games at Inland Empire, they will look to continue their strong play as they return to San Jose tonight to kickoff a three game series against the Modesto Nuts.
