August 3, 2014

SAN JOSE - The Stockton Ports pounded out 15 hits and never trailed en route to a 7-2 victory over the San Jose Giants on Sunday evening at Municipal Stadium. With the defeat, the Giants drop three out of four games in the series and finish with a 4-11 record against Stockton this season at Municipal Stadium.

Brandon Bednar (1-for-4, HR, RBI) hit a ninth-inning solo home run for San Jose to extend his hitting streak to 13 games. The Giants were held to five hits in the loss.

The Ports jumped out early with single runs in the first and second innings against San Jose starter Joe Biagini to take a 2-0 lead. Daniel Robertson started the game with a single before Chad Pinder drew a four-pitch walk. After a wild pitch moved Robertson to third and Pinder stole second, Renato Nunez delivered an RBI groundout plating the first run of the night.

In the top of the second, Beau Taylor led off with a single before Bobby Crocker doubled to put runners on second and third. Jaycob Brugman then lined out to third on a diving catch made by Mitch Delfino, but Ryan Gorton followed with an RBI groundout to shortstop to make it 2-0.

Stockton added to their lead with two more runs in the top of the fourth. After a leadoff single from Healy and a one-out double off the bat of Crocker, Brugman lined an RBI single into left. Gorton then delivered a sacrifice fly to center for a 4-0 advantage.

The Ports then kept the pressure on with another run in the top of the fifth. Back-to-back singles from Olson and Nunez put runners on the corners with none out before Healy grounded into a double play to score a run.

Stockton starter Chris Lamb (4-2) fired seven shutout innings with just two hits allowed to pick-up the win. Lamb walked two and struck out seven during his masterful pitching performance.

The Giants didn't pick-up their first hit in the contest until Tyler Horan led off the bottom of the fifth with a bunt single. Two batters later, Chuckie Jones drew a one-out walk, however Sam Mende followed by grounding into an inning-ending double play.

In the bottom of the sixth, Alberto Robles led off with a single to left, but Lamb came back to retire the next three hitters to end the inning. Lamb then worked a 1-2-3 bottom of the seventh to complete his outing. Lamb retired 20 out of the 24 batters he faced.

San Jose finally broke through in the bottom of the eighth against the Ports bullpen as Jones led off with a single before Mende doubled to deep left putting runners on second and third. Robles then hit a sacrifice fly to shallow right plating Jones to cut the lead to 5-1.

Stockton though answered in the top of the ninth when Olson clubbed a two-out, two-run homer to deep right off of Stephen Johnson. The home run, Olson's league-leading 32nd of the season, pushed the lead to 7-1.

Bednar's solo home run to leadoff the bottom of the ninth made the score 7-2, but reliever Andres Avila recovered to secure the Ports series victory.

Biagini (7-8) suffered the loss for the Giants after yielding five runs (all earned) on 11 hits over five innings. He walked two and struck out four.
