Giants Fall 10-6 To Ports, Win Streak Ends At Four

Stockton knocks out 16 hits to even series
July 12, 2014

STOCKTON - Stockton scored 10 runs on 15 hits over the first five innings and the Giants could not recover in a 10-6 loss to the Ports on Saturday evening at Banner Island Ballpark. Stockton overcame an early three-run deficit eventually taking the lead for good in the bottom of the fourth. The loss snapped San Jose's winning streak at four games.

Alberto Robles (2-for-4, 2B, HR, RBI) homered and Mitch Delfino (2-for-5, 2B, 3 RBI) drove in three runs to lead the Giants offensively in defeat. Chuckie Jones (2-for-5, 2B) added a pair of hits while Brian Ragira (1-for-5) extended his hitting streak to 12 games.

San Jose jumped out early scoring twice in the top of the first before an out was recorded in the game. Jesus Galindo led off by drawing a walk before stealing second base. Jones followed with a single to put runners on the corners and then Delfino hammered a two-RBI double into the left center field gap.

The Giants extended their lead to 3-0 when Robles crushed a solo home run to left in the top of the second. The home run was Robles' second of the season.

Joe Kurrasch started on the mound for San Jose and began his night with a 1-2-3 first inning before running into trouble in the second. With one out, Jaycob Brugman doubled and advanced to third when Bobby Crocker grounded out. Then with Wade Kirkland at the plate, Kurrasch uncorked a wild pitch allowing Brugman to score the first Stockton run of the night.

The Ports then plated two runs against Kurrasch in the bottom of the third to tie the game 3-3. A walk to Chad Oberacker started the frame before Colin Walsh singled with one out to put runners on first and second. Kurrasch then picked-off Oberacker at second for the second out, but a single from Matt Olson was followed by consecutive RBI singles from Ryon Healy and Brugman to draw Stockton even.

The Giants responded with two runs of their own in the top of the fourth to temporarily reclaim the lead. Robles began the frame by reaching on a fielding error committed by Healy at third. Shawn Payne was up next and he doubled down the left field line to put runners on second and third. Galindo followed with an RBI groundout to second as Robles scored for a 4-3 San Jose lead. Then after Jones struck out, Delfino reached a bunt single to third plating Payne to make it 5-3.

Stockton though came right back in the bottom of the fourth as seven consecutive batters reached base during the inning. After Kurrasch struck out Crocker to start the inning, Kirkland doubled down the left field line. Ryan Gorton followed with a single to bring home Kirkland to cut the lead to 5-4. Oberacker was up next and he doubled down the right field line, however on the play, Gorton was thrown out at home attempting to score the tying run. Kurrasch though was unable to finish the inning as Daniel Robertson then doubled into the left field corner scoring Oberacker to make it 5-5. Walsh followed with an RBI single to give the Ports their first lead of the game. Jorge Bucardo was then summoned from the bullpen, but he walked Olson and then gave up an RBI single to Healy - the seventh straight hitter to reach base - to make it 7-5 Stockton.

The Ports kept the pressure on in the bottom of the fifth as Bucardo issued a leadoff walk to Crocker before Kirkland belted a two-run opposite field homer to right. The round-tripper pushed the advantage to 9-5. Later in the frame, Robertson singled with two outs and scored on Walsh's single to make it 10-5.

The Giants scored their final run of the contest in the top of the eighth as Robles led off with a double to deep left center. Two batters later, Galindo reached on an infield single to first and when the ball was thrown away by the first baseman Olson for an error, Robles raced home to trim the lead to 10-6.

Jonathan Joseph (5-3) earned the win out of the Stockton bullpen after four dominant innings of long relief. Joseph, who entered the contest to begin the top of the fifth, allowed one unearned run on two hits with no walks and three strikeouts. After scoring five runs over the first four innings, San Jose managed just one run on three hits over the final five innings of the game.

Kurrasch (7-3) suffered the loss after surrendering a season-high seven runs (all earned) on 11 hits in 3 2/3 innings. The left-hander walked one and struck out two.
