Former World Series MVP Freese to Rehab with the Bees

May 17, 2014

SALT LAKE CITY (May 17, 2014) - The Los Angeles Angels announced today third baseman David Freese will join the Salt Lake Bees for a rehab assignment. Freese is expected to be in the Bees lineup Saturday night and start as the designated hitter.

Freese was placed on the 15-day disabled list on May 3 with a fractured right middle finger sustained after Rangers right-hander Colby Lewis hit Freese with a pitch. Prior to his injury, Freese hit .202 through 24 games to start the 2014 season, including two home runs and eight RBIs. The third baseman is in his first season with the Angels and was acquired in November by the Halos along with pitcher Fernando Salas from the St. Louis Cardinals in exchange for outfielders Peter Bourjos and Randal Grichuk.

While with the Cardinals, Freese was named the World Series and National League Championship Series Most Valuable Player leading the Cardinals to the 2011 World Series title over the Texas Rangers. Freese set a MLB record with 21 RBIs in the 2011 postseason and is one of only six players to win both a League Championship Series and World Series MVP award in the same season. Freese was also selected to the 2012 National League All-Star team.

Freese joins outfielder Kole Calhoun and relief pitcher Dane De La Rosa who are also on rehab assignments with the Bees. Calhoun went 2-for-3 with a double and run scored in his first game with Salt Lake last night.

The Bees return to Smith's Ballpark on Monday, May 19 to begin an eight-game homestand against Albuquerque and Fresno. On Tuesday, May 20 the team will host the annual Prevention Dimensions Kids' Day that will see more than 10,000 elementary school students attend a game during a special 10:35 start. On Saturday, May 24 the Bees will honor our armed forces with Military Appreciation Night. All military personnel with a military ID will be given free admission by presenting their ID at the Smith's Ballpark box office. Tickets for all games are available with no online fees at slbees.com.
