Tennessee falls to Jackson to end 2017 campaign

SEVIERVILLE, TENNESSEE  - The Tennessee Smokies lost their last game of the season Monday afternoon 6-4 to the Jackson Generals. 
Duane Underwood Jr. got the ball for Tennessee as he went 7.0 innings giving up six hits and four earned runs. James Norwood would come in for relief duties in the eighth to close out the game. Underwood would receive the loss to end the season with a 13-7 record. 
Victor Reyes would get the scoring started in the top of the fourth when he hit a two-run home run to score Travis Denker to give the Generals a 2-0 lead. Following Jeffrey Baez's double, Underwood Jr. would score in the bottom of the sixth on an error by Jamie Westbrook to bring the Smokies within one. 
In the top of the seventh, Ryan Atkinson would hit a two RBI double to score Vladimir Frias and Jose Queliz to extend the Generals lead to 4-1. Travis Denker would hit a solo shot in the top of the eighth to add to the Generals lead 5-1. Two batters later Marty Herum would hit a sacrifice fly to score Reyes to make the score 6-1 in favor of the Generals. 
In the bottom of the eighth Yasiel Balaguert would hit a three RBI double to drive in Kevin Cornelius, Jeffrey Baez, and Andrew Ely and cut the Generals lead to 6-4. That would end the scoring for the game, as the Generals would claim the victory 6-4 while also winning the series. 
Ryan Atkinson would get the start for Generals. Atkinson pitched 7.1 innings giving up seven hits while giving up three runs. Kirby Bellow and Josh Taylor would come in for the final innings of relief for the Generals. Atkinson would earn the win and end the season with a 4-2 record. 
Following the series finale on Monday afternoon the Smokies finish off the 2017 season welcoming 313,796 fans into the ballpark, which is the new franchise single-season record. The Smokies also set a new mark on average attendance in 2017, averaging 4,981 fans at Smokies Stadium per night. The club will kickoff the 2018 season on April 5 as they will travel to Mississippi and take on the Braves to begin the year, and will return to Tennessee for the home opener on April 11.
