Beloit can't avoid sweep, falls to Cedar Rapids 10-3

August 14, 2014

The Beloit Snappers couldn't avoid a series sweep and lost to the Cedar Rapids Kernels 10-3 Thursday night.

The Snappers struggled offensively all night long and the Kernels took advantage of two big innings in the sixth and seventh innings to take control of the game.

Mat Batts picked up the win for the Kernels while Matt Stalcup recorded the loss for Beloit.

The Snappers looked to be off to a good start as they answered a Cedar Rapids run in the first inning with a run of their own in the bottom of the frame.

Matt Chapman provided the game-tying RBI as he drove B.J. Boyd home from first base with an RBI-double to left field and the game was tied 1-1 after the first inning of play.

After four scoreless innings, the Kernels broke open the tie ballgame in the sixth inning to take a 3-1 advantage. Alex Swim began the scoring with an RBI-single to score Chad Christensen and J.D. Williams' RBI-triple scored Swim from first base.

In the following frame, Cedar Rapids extended its lead by putting up five runs to take a decisive 8-1 lead. After a Melvin Mercedes fielding error loaded the bases, Chad Christensen doubled to left field to score two runners.

In the next at-bat, Mitch Garver plated two additional runners as his RBI-double gave the Kernels a 7-1 lead. Garver added the fifth run of the inning as he advanced on a fly ball and scored on a wild pitch.

After the Kernels added another run in the eighth inning, the Snappers scored its second run of the ballgame courtesy of a B.J. Boyd RBI-groundout to score Branden Cogswell.

Max Murphy hit a solo shot home run to deep center field to give Cedar Rapids a 10-2 lead.

Beloit added its last run in the bottom of the ninth as a sacrifice fly from Michael Soto scored Tyler Marincov.

The Snappers head to Clinton to begin a six-game road trip Friday night.
