Beloit 6 Kane County 5 - Tuesday
WP: Milburn (1-1)
LP: Vargas (1-1)
S: Highberger (1)
The Snappers scored six runs with two outs through the help of seven extra-base hits during Tuesday's 6-5 win in Geneva to even up their weekday series with the Kane County Cougars. The Western Division foes combined for 23 hits, 10 extra-base hits, and 17 runners left on base while both pitching staffs added up 21 strikeouts. Four of the Snappers five wins this season have been decided by one run.
JaVon Shelby hit his second homer of the year on a two-out, two-run homer to left field to cap off Beloit's three-run fourth inning. The Snappers profited on three consecutive two-out hits in the third inning to start their scoring. Edwin Diaz gave Beloit a 2-1 lead with the Snappers' third hit of the game to plate a pair. Diaz drew a bases-loaded walk with two outs in the sixth for his third RBI of the afternoon which turned out to be the deciding run.
Kane County narrowed the Beloit lead to one run after loading the bases in the seventh inning. Jasrado Chisholm and Jason Morozowski delivered RBI hits, but Snappers pitcher Matt Milburn stranded the tying and go-ahead runs in scoring position to preserve his first win of the year. Luis Barrera made a game-saving catch at the right field wall to rob Luis Alejandro Basabe of a home run to lead off the bottom of the eighth.
Snappers pitching fanned 10 more Cougars Tuesday. Beloit has recorded at least 10 punch outs in each of their last 6 games and entered play third in strikeouts among all Midwest League squads behind Kane County and Fort Wayne.
Miguel Mercedes extended his hitting streak to eight games as he cranked two doubles in a 2-for-5 day. He now owns five two-baggers on the new campaign, which is tied for the league lead after the completion Tuesday's afternoon schedule. Collin Theroux (2-for-4) also had two doubles and is 6-for-his-last-10 at the plate. Diaz (2-for-3, 3 RBI) and Eric Marinez also turned in multi-hit games. The Snappers also had an extra-base hit from Cole Gruber (1-for-2, double), who also walked three times from the leadoff spot.
