Clinton jumped out to a 5-0 lead on Saturday and held the Snappers tying run at third base to break Beloit's string of five straight wins over the LumberKings. The one-run loss was the 40th total ballgame decided by one run this season for Beloit.
Miguel Mercedes started the comeback attempt with a two-run homer to center field in the sixth inning, his 16th of the season. Luke Persico tightened the game to a 5-3 score with an RBI double in the eighth before he went down swinging for the final out of the ninth with J.C. Rodriguez standing on third base.
Mercedes nearly cleared the left field wall in the second inning, but the deep fly ball banged off the wall for his team-high 23rd double. He finished the night 2-for-3 with a walk. Josh Vidales and Rodriguez each had multi-hit nights with extra-base hits, a triple by Vidales and a ninth inning double by Rodriguez.
Altamirano allowed a season-high nine hits to the LumberKings as he labored through five innings. A slow-rolling ground ball hit by Bryson Brigman snuck past first basemen Miguel Mercedes and scored the first two runs of the game for Clinton with one out in the first inning. The LumberKings extended their lead to 4-0 with single runs in the third and fourth before Dimas Ojeda launched a home run to right as the first hitter to face reliever Mitchell Jordan.
Beloit's defense converted their 116th double play and 46th outfield assist on Saturday and continue to lead the Midwest League in both categories. Persico was the outfielder credited with the assist from right field, his league-best 15th on the campaign.
