Snappers Show LumberKings Who's Bos

Beloit Takes Wild Game One
September 5, 2013
CLINTON, IA - Christopher Bostick smacked a go-ahead, three-run double in the top of the tenth inning and the Beloit Snappers made it stand up in a 9-6 victory over the Clinton LumberKings in the first round of the Midwest League playoffs on Wednesday night at Ashford University Field.

Beloit now leads the best of three series one game to none and will try to close it out on Thursday night in Game Two at Pohlman Field.

The top of the tenth began with two singles wrapped around a walk against George Mieses (0-1), loading the bases with nobody out and setting the stage for Bostick. The second baseman rapped a double off the wall in left, bringing in all three runners. Bostick scored three batters later when Nick Rickles added insurance with an RBI single. The LumberKings did score once in the tenth on a Marcus Littlewood homer, but that was all they'd get, as Austin House (1-0) closed it out.

Both lineups were stymied until Clinton broke through in the bottom of the fourth. Tyler Marlette got the LumberKings on the scoreboard with a solo homer off the scoreboard in left center. That lead was stretched to 2-0 in the fifth, as Janelfry Zorrilla lined a two-out single into left, plating Martin Peguero.

For much of the evening, it seemed Clinton starter Victor Sanchez would make that lead stand up. He shut out the Snappers through six innings on only three hits, but he was unable to continue that success in the seventh. After a lead-off single by Bostick, Renato Nunez demolished the first pitch of his at-bat, blasting it way over the left field wall to tie the score.

The score remained tied at 2-2 until a wild ninth. With one out in the top of the ninth, Bositck walloped a solo homer and, three batters later, Rickles hit a round-tripper of his own, this one a two-run bomb, and Beloit had a 5-2 lead.

In the LumberKings half of the ninth, two lead-off singles were followed by two outs, with a run scoring on a fielder's choice for the second out. A double by the next batter put the tying run on second and that was succeeded by a walk and a wild pitch, scoring another run and putting the tying run on third. That brought up Dario Pizzano, who hit a ground ball that appeared like it would end the game, but an error on the play allowed the tying run to cross the plate. The Snappers, however, proved resilient and won the game one frame later.

For Game Two of this first round series, the teams will head to Beloit's Pohlman Field. The Snappers turn to RHP Dylan Covey (1-1, 4.75 ERA) while the LumberKings will send out RHP Dylan Unsworth (4-1, 2.32 ERA). The first pitch is set for 6:30pm. All fans who were holding tickets for Friday's game can use those ticket for Game Two. The festivities will also include Fan Appreciation Night, meaning prizes and giveaways will take place all night long. The Snappers will also have food and drink specials at the ballpark including 12 ounce drafts of beer for $1, fountain sodas for $1 and much more. The winners for the Mega Raffle will be announced and postgame fireworks, sponsored by Welder's Supply, will put the cap on the evening.
