Patriots cruise past Curve in series opener

Altoona, Penn. - The Somerset Patriots (54-36) controlled Tuesday’s series-opener over the Altoona Curve (53-35) with a 9-1 win at People’s Natural Gas Field.

The night belonged to Oswald Peraza and Hayden Wesneski.

Peraza led off the ballgame with a solo home run (8) in his first at-bat with the team in over a week. He later added an RBI double in the fourth and an RBI single in the seventh. The top New York Yankees prospect finished his night 4-for-6 with a home run, two doubles, two runs scored and three RBI.

Wesneski (W, 4-4) worked six scoreless innings and struck out five batters to earn the win. He retired the final 12 batters that he faced and has now tossed 17-consecutive scoreless innings since the second inning of his August 4th start against the Bowie Baysox.

The Patriots grabbed hold of the game with three runs in the first inning, including an RBI single from Dermis Garcia.

Oswaldo Cabrera contributed a 2-for-6 performance with an RBI double in the second and a two-run single in the sixth. The switch-hitter currently leads the team with 54 RBI on the year.

Altoona’s lone run came on a Mason Martin RBI single in the eighth inning.

Travis MacGregor (L, 3-6) allowed five runs (four earned) on eight hits over four innings to take the loss.

The Patriots and Curve continue their six-game series Wednesday night. Left-handed pitcher Ken Waldichuk (4-2, 3.71 ERA) takes the mound for Somerset against Altoona right-hander Jeff Passantino (1-6, 4.58 ERA). First pitch at People’s Natural Gas Field is set for 6:30 p.m.
