PAPILLION, Nebraska - The Nashville Sounds were edged by the Omaha Storm Chasers 4-1 in Sunday's matinee. The victory clinched the three-game series for Omaha.
Nashville's Frankie Montas and Omaha's Clay Bucholz went toe-to-toe on the mound as they both cruised through the first five innings without allowing a run. Omaha finally broke the seal on the scoreless ball game in the sixth inning. After inducing a fly out to begin the inning, Montas yielded a single to Logan Moon and walked Ramón Torres before being pulled from the game.
Bobby Wahl entered in relief and balked before throwing his first pitch, allowing Moon and Torres to each advance a base. Back-to-back doubles from MLB rehabbers Salvador Perez and Alex Gordon gave the Storm Chasers a lead they would not relinquish.
The Sounds responded in the top of the seventh inning as Franklin Barreto swatted his second home run of the season to lead off the frame. That would be all the offense Nashville could muster.
Montas finished with 5 1/3 innings and allowed a pair of runs on three hits while walking one and fanning three. Bucholz lasted an inning longer, going 6 1/3 allowing the lone Sounds run of the game, walking one and striking out three.
Nick Dini belted a solo blast off Wahl to lead off the seventh inning and give the Storm Chasers a bit of insurance. Wahl went a season-long 2 2/3 innings and allowed his first runs of the season while notching five punch outs.
The Sounds will try and salvage a win as they wrap up their three-game series against the Storm Chasers Monday morning. Right-hander Daniel Gossett (0-0, 0.00) starts for the Sounds against left-hander Jonathan Dziedzic for the Storm Chasers. First pitch is scheduled for 11:05 a.m.
