SOTUH BEND, IN – Matt Turner misfired way outside on a pitch that got the backstop and pinch runner Yeison Santana darted home, sliding headfirst into the plate to get the victory.

A bizarre game deserved a rather bizzare finish.

More accurately, a game that featured five throwing errors and six wild pitches, fittingly ended with an errant toss.

South Bend overcame five errors on the night, a season high, and tied up the series with their 7-6 win in extras.

The Cubs got their second rehab start of the month as LHP Wade Miley toed the rubber to begin the game for South Bend, marking his first appearance back at this ballpark since 2009 when he was a member of the South Bend Silver Hawks. Miley gave up a bloop double to Angel Martinez to start the game and the next batter, Joe Naranjo, weakly hit a single up the middle to put the Captains in front.

But scoring first has been costly this week. Going into the game the team that had scored first had lost all three games in the series.

The home team answered back with a vengance when they got their first shot to bat. Jordan Nwogu and Fabian Pertuz singled to start the frame and two wild pitches later Nwogu scored to tie things up. A Kevin Made sac-fly gave the Cubs their first lead, 2-1, and with two outs and Owen Caissie at second the Cubs rallied off three two-out runs. Pablo Aliendo continued a red-hot July with an RBI single, two batters later B.J. Murray did the same, and Luis Verdugo doubled down the line to cap the first with a five spot.

With Wade Miley still out there in the third, Lake County put up a five-spot of their own to take a 6-5 lead. The inning began with a walk and then back-to-back singles from Naranjo and Alexfri Planez. Planez's single produced a run and two batters later Milan Tolentino's single scored two as Fabian Pertuz's throw home was wide of the mark for the second error of the inning. Sheldon Reed came on for Miley and gave up a sac-fly to Mike Amditis that tied the game and a ground ball to Verdugo with two outs was booted to put the Captains back ahead by one, 6-5.

In the sixth, with the bases loaded Verdugo made up for it. With one out he ripped one up the middle that hit the pitcher's foot and ricocheted toward third, scoring the tying run on the ground out.

This game went to extras largely do to another stellar outing from Luis Devers. Devers in his fifth appearance with the Cubs went five shutout innings in relief, allowing three hits, walking just one, and striking out six. In 21.1 innings with South Bend he has allowed one run.

Hunter Bigge followed suit witha scoreless ninth and then struck out the side in the tenth and didn't allow the runner at second to move. Bigge has allowed one run in the last month.

In the bottom of the tenth Casey Opitz dropped down a sac bunt. Matt Turner spun and went to third with the throw trying to get Santana but Gabriel Rodguez caught the throw nowhere near the base. Murray came up with men at the corners and nobody out and Turner sent one to the backstop. Ballgame.

It wasn't pretty, folks, but the best teams find a way to win games just like this one.

Two games remain this week as South Bend tries to win their third series in a row. Game five is set for Saturday night at 7:05 ET.
