South Bend, IN: The South Bend Cubs have begun their seven-game homestand with a three game losing streak to the Great Lakes Loons. On Friday night, Great Lakes completed their sweep over South Bend by a final of 6-3 in 10 innings played. Much like Wednesday night, the Cubs put up a strong fight to get back into the game, but could not hold on in extras.

Similar to yesterday, the Loons got on the board quickly against starter Brendon Little. Little, who three 88 pitches in a no-decision effort, exited the game after 4.2 innings pitched. South Bend answered thanks to Delvin Zinn in the bottom of the 4th. A RBI sac fly brought the game to a 3-1 Loons lead.
The resilient Cubs responded with two more runs in the bottom of the 7th. Miguel Amaya ripped a line drive down the third base line to tie the game at 3-3. With no scoring in the 8th and 9th frames, the game went to extras.
In game one of the series, Great Lakes plated six runs in the 11th inning to beat the Cubs. Tonight, it was much of the same as Luis Aquino allowed three runs in the 10th inning to surrender the tie. The Loons led 6-3 with South Bend having three outs remaining.
John Shoemaker and the Loons ran out of capable bullpen arms, so they turned to their first baseman Brock Carpenter in the bottom of the 10th. Carpenter shut the door and retired the Cubs to clinch the series sweep for Great Lakes.
With the loss, the Cubs fall to 54-62 on the campaign and 20-27 in the second half. The homestand continues for South Bend tomorrow night as the Cubs welcome division rival Lake County to Four Winds Field for the first of four games. First pitch is set for 7:05 PM.
