Major League Baseball Advanced Media announced on Monday that State College Spikes third baseman Evan Mendoza has been named the New York-Penn League's Player of the Week for the week of July 31-August 6, marking the second consecutive week he has garnered the weekly honor.
Mendoza earned the award again after recording a .481 average with a 13-for-27 performance at the plate for the previous seven days. The Sarasota, FL native also hit two home runs and drove in six runs, with five multi-hit performances over the course of the week. Mendoza now has eight games with three hits or more in his first professional, and 18 with multiple hits.
Since July 20, Mendoza has increased his batting average from .282 to .373 to vault to the top of the NYPL in hitting. The Cardinals' 2017 11th-round draft choice out of N.C. State also leads the league with 56 hits, 14 doubles, 33 runs scored and a .567 slugging percentage. Mendoza's 25 runs batted in and .435 on-base percentage are also second-best in the NYPL in both categories.
Mendoza is the first Spike ever to be named NYPL Player of the Week twice in one season, and the first player in the NYPL to earn back-to-back Player of the Week awards since Bobby Dalbec of the Lowell Spinners for August 15-21 and August 22-28, 2017.
