Spikes alums featured on Opening Day rosters

16 former Spikes on MLB squads to start 2017 season

By State College Spikes | April 4, 2017 9:37 AM ET

The curtain has opened on the 2017 Major League Baseball season, and State College Spikes fans will see some familiar faces on big league fields this season. 16 players who have worn a Spikes uniform, including a pair of All-Stars, were scattered across MLB Opening Day rosters.

Over half of the Spikes in "The Show" are on the Pittsburgh Pirates, including budding superstars Gregory Polanco (2011 Spikes outfielder) and Starling Marte (made MLB rehab appearance for Spikes in 2012).

Pirates closer Tony Watson, who reached the 2014 MLB All-Star Game, is one of two current Spikes in the majors who have played in the Midsummer Classic. Utility man Brock Holt, who played in the 2015 MLB All-Star Game, is back with the Boston Red Sox this season.

The Spikes' impact on the majors will be felt most in the bullpen this season. 2006 Spikes pitchers Adam Ottavino and Luke Gregerson are slated as setup men for the Colorado Rockies and Houston Astros, respectively. Joely Rodriguez, who pitched for the Spikes from 2010-12, will serve as a reliever for the Philadelphia Phillies.

Fans can see more future major league stars begin their Road to the Show, presented by HRI, Inc., when the Spikes hit the field for Opening Night on Monday, June 19, 2017. The defending New York-Penn League champions will host 38 nights of fun, affordable family entertainment on the 2017 home schedule, which runs through September 7.
