Several members of the State College Spikes' 2016 New York-Penn League championship team will receive their rings on Sunday in Jupiter, FL. The ring presentation ceremony will take place prior to the St. Louis Cardinals' 1:05 p.m. Spring Training game against the Miami Marlins at Roger Dean Stadium.
Members of the Spikes front office, as well as Cardinals personnel, are scheduled to present the rings to the players, coaches and staff from last year's team.
Led by manager Johnny Rodriguez, the 2016 Spikes won a club-record 50 games en route to the second NYPL crown in franchise history. The Spikes topped the NYPL offensive leaderboard with nearly five runs per game in the regular season, and then knocked off Staten Island in the Semifinal Series before a two-game sweep of Hudson Valley in the Championship Series. Rodriguez is now set to manage the Double-A Springfield Cardinals.
12-year-old bench coach Josiah Viera, who was a major part of the Spikes' 2014 title run and continues to be the club's inspirational leader, will be among the honorees at Sunday's presentation.
The rings were designed and manufactured by Jostens, which has crafted the rings of Super Bowl, College Football Playoff, NBA Finals, Stanley Cup Final and World Series champions for nearly 50 years.
New manager Joe Kruzel will lead the Spikes as they begin their 2017 home schedule with an Opening Night matchup against the Williamsport Crosscutters (Philadelphia Phillies) on Monday, June 19. The Spikes will defend their New York-Penn League championship over 38 games featuring fun, affordable family entertainment through September 7.
