Davis, Gentry Nominated For GIBBYs

Former Indians on ballot for 2013's 'Greatness in Baseball'
November 4, 2013

SPOKANE, Wash., - Major League Baseball announced the nominees for the 2013 Greatness in Baseball Yearly Awards (GIBBYs), and former Spokane Indians Chris Davis ('06) and Craig Gentry ('06) have both been nominated in different categories.

Davis has been nominated for the MLB MVP, Hitter and Breakout Hitter awards. Gentry has been nominated for Play of the Year after a miraculous diving catch back in April.

Davis, the Baltimore Orioles everyday first baseman, just finished the best season of his young career. The 27-year-old from Longview, Texas, belted a league-leading 53 home runs while also leading the league with 138 RBIs. In 2006, Davis hit .277 with 15 homers and 42 RBIs.

Gentry, a utility outfielder known for his speed, made a diving, back-handed catch to help the Texas Rangers preserve a 4-2 victory over the Chicago Cubs on April 16. Coincidentally, that game-ending catch preserved a winning decision for Derek Holland, another former Spokane Indian. Gentry hit .281 with 15 doubles and 20 stolen bases for the Indians in '06.

The GIBBYs are voted on by media, front-office personnel, MLB alumni, fans at MLB.com and the Society for American Baseball Research. The awards debuted in 2002, but it wasn't until 2010 that a former Spokane Indian was honored. Bruce Bochy, Spokane's manager in 1989, won Manager of the Year in '10 after guiding the San Francisco Giants to a World Series Championship.

The Spokane Indians open the 2014 regular season on Friday, June 13th at Avista Stadium against the Eugene Emeralds.
