Indians, Tribe Take Collaborative Step

"Spoaqin" will be featured on alternate home jersey in 2014
January 9, 2014

Spokane, WA - The Spokane Indians have announced a new home alternate uniform for the 2014 season - a uniform that uses the Salish logo as well as the name Spokane in the native language. "S'q'n'i" will be featured in lettering across the front chest along with a character not in the english language.

"We welcomed the opportunity to collaborate with our namesake professional baseball team on this project," said Rudy Peone, Chairman of the Spokane Tribe. "We view this collaboration as a significant opportunity to educate thousands of baseball fans about the language and culture of the Spokane Tribe of Indians - the city's first inhabitants."

In 2006, the Spokane Indians Baseball Club and the Spokane Tribe of Indians made history by collaborating on a rebranding of the baseball team's logo by becoming the first pairing of such two parties to respectfully agree on the use of local native imagery. During the rebranding, a Salish version of the logo was created. This logo has been stitched on the team's sleeves since its inception. Brandiose, a nationally respected branding company that specializes in minor and major league sports teams, took lead on the design.

"We're extremely proud of our close relationship with the Tribe, and these new uniforms will help foster that even further" said Otto Klein, the Spokane Indians Senior Vice President. "We appreciate the tribe allowing us to be a vehicle to promote their language and culture."

The Spokane Indians will wear the Salish uniforms at home throughout the season at select games starting with Opening Night Fireworks on Friday, June 13th against the Eugene Emeralds. The jerseys will be worn on most Friday and Saturday nights at Avista Stadium.

The uniforms will be signed by each Spokane Indians player and auctioned off at the end of the season with proceeds benefiting Spokane Tribal Youth programs.
